HANOVER, N.H. —
Alex Knox-Jones picked up the Big Green's lone victory at the No. 6 singles position on Friday at Alexis Boss Tennis Center as Dartmouth suffered a 4-1 loss to No. 19 Columbia in the opening round of the ECAC Championship.
"I love this team - these guys play so hard from start to finish," said
Xander Centenari, Dartmouth's John Kenfield and Chuck Kinyon Head Coach. "We were down 3-0 today and it looked like for a while we could actually get the job done. We won at No. 6 singles, we were up a set on Court 4 and forced a third on Courts 2 and 3. We couldn't quite make it happen today, but I love the way this team plays for each other."
Columbia clinched the doubles point with a win on Court 2 before sealing the victory in singles when Roko Horvat outlasted
Miles Groom at the No. 2 position.
Alex Knox-Jones's triumph at Court 6 over Theo Winegar represented Dartmouth's lone win, despite several close battles.
Waleed Qadir (No. 3) and
Henry Ren (No. 4) were both in the midst of three-set matches when the 4-1 decision was finalized.
Hikaru Takeda suffered just his first singles loss of the season, now standing at 6-1.
"The energy was electric on our home courts," Centenari added. "Thanks to all the fans for making the environment fantastic. It wasn't the result we wanted tonight, but this team is knocking on the door."
Following the hard-fought match, Dartmouth takes the court at noon on Saturday to face Yale, who fell to Penn in Friday's action. The Big Green will take on either Brown or Princeton on Sunday.
