HANOVER, N.H. – Mark Gallant's second period goal proved to be the difference as the Dartmouth men's hockey team defeated Union, 1-0, in ECAC Hockey action on Saturday evening at Thompson Arena. The Big Green improve to 5-21-1, 4-15-1 while the Dutchmen drop to 13-17-2, 7-12-1.
Gallant's goal was his second of the season.
Cooper Black made 25 saves to earn his third shutout of the season.
Union nearly took the lead midway through the first period after going on a 5v3 power play. Black came up with two quick saves to keep the game level.
Dartmouth almost went up 1-0 less than a minute into the second period.
Ian Pierce took a shot from the point that was saved by Union goaltender Connor Murphy. The rebound was loose around the front of goal and Murphy and the Dutchmen defense managed to keep the puck out of the net.
The Big Green got on the board a minute later after Gallant intercepted a pass in the offensive zone. Gallant immediately fired the puck to Murphy's right side into the back of the net to give Dartmouth a 1-0 lead.
Black once again came up with two big stops, including one just outside the crease from Christian Sanda, in the second period to keep the shutout alive.
Midway through the second,
Tucker McRae nearly scored his second goal of the season during a two-minute stretch of 4v4 hockey. Pierce laid it off for McRae, who's effort was stopped by Murphy.
Union pulled Murphy with 1:15 left in the game to go for the equalizer. The Big Green fended off the Dutchmen attack, holding on for the 1-0 lead and third shutout of the year.
Dartmouth heads to the North Country next weekend for the final weekend of the regular season. The Big Green take on Clarkson on Friday evening followed by St. Lawrence on Saturday. Both games will be available to stream on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet.
