HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth sophomore
John Steel Hagenbuch was chosen as the Eastern Intercollegiate Skiing Association (EISA) Men's Nordic Skier of the Week on Monday for his performance at the Williams Carnival. He is the third Big Green skier to earn one of the weekly awards from the organization this season.
In just his second carnival with the Big Green, Hagenbuch began the carnival by finishing third in the 10K classic on Friday, helping Dartmouth win the event. But the native of Ketchum, Idaho, was even better the following day as he won the 10K freestyle by just over 10 seconds for his first collegiate victory and third podium in four races to date (placing fourth in the other). The Big Green narrowly missed out on winning the freestyle race, coming up just one point shy of Vermont.
Hagenbuch did not start in the first three carnivals this season due to international competitions, including the U.S. Cross Country Ski National Championships in early January where he took second in the 10K freestyle. And the month prior, the sophomore collected three podiums in Super Tour races as well.
Dartmouth will have one more tuneup prior to the NCAA Championships next month with the EISA Championships hosted by St. Lawrence on Friday and Saturday at Mount Van Hoevenberg and Whiteface. The races on Friday, Feb. 24 will include the giant slalom and freestyle races for both the men (10K) and women (5K), while Saturday's events will feature the slalom and a 20K classic.
Note: The other two Big Green athletes to be named a Skier of the Week are sophomore
Allie Resnick in women's alpine and freshman
Ava Thurston in women's Nordic.
