WILMINGTON, N.Y. — In a non-scoring event to make up for the lost giant slalom at the St. Michael's Carnival, the EISA teams gathered a day early at Whiteface before the St. Lawrence Carnival to compete in the GS for consideration toward NCAA qualifying. The Dartmouth ski team amassed the most points today (232), winning the women's race with 114 while the men finished second only to Vermont (132-118).
The women kicked off the day's skiing, and sophomore
Carly Elsinger boasted the second-best time on the first run, just eight-hundredths of a second off the pace behind Colby's Lydia Riddell. Although there wasn't another Big Green skier in the top 10 after the morning session, some strong performances on the second run vaulted Dartmouth to the top of the team standings. While Elsinger managed another excellent run, posting the third-best time in the afternoon, senior
Gwen Wattenmaker climbed seven spots from 13th into sixth and freshman
Riley Grosdidier jumped eight places into 10th. Elsinger's combined time of 2:12.78 thrust her just ahead of Riddell, but Vermont's Justine Clement surpassed her by about a quarter of a second to take the gold.
Sophomore
Oliver Morgan provided the time to beat in the first run of the men's race, crossing the tape in 1:02.59, 12 hundredths of a second ahead of Vermont's Mathias Tefre. Dartmouth also had junior
Max Martin and
Oscar Zimmer among the top 10, putting them in good position to try and overtake the Catamounts, who had skiers in second, third and fourth place. For the second time down the slopes, senior
Hunter Brayton, who was in 23rd place after his first attempt, crushed the course and had the best time with only the top five skiers remaining at the gate. But the fog and ice became too much, ending the race and wiping out the times from the second run, leaving Morgan atop the podium.
The St. Lawrence Carnival will begin in earnest tomorrow morning with the giant slalom beginning at 9:30 a.m. and the women's 5K freestyle at Mount Van Hoevenberg starting at 10 a.m. with the men's 10K freestyle to follow at 11:30 a.m.
