JEFFERSONVILLE, Vt. — The Dartmouth alpine ski team took to the slopes at Smuggler's Notch on Saturday to finally compete in the slalom for the St. Michael's Carnival that was scheduled to take place two weeks ago, and both the men and women placed a skier on the podium to highlight the afternoon's race. Sophomore
Allie Resnick won for the fourth time in five carnival races to date, while freshman
Oscar Zimmer claimed second for his first career podium in the men's slalom.
The points counted double with the cancellation of the giant slalom due to the arctic winds and temperatures that blew through New England this weekend. Vermont took advantage by winning both events today to win the carnival with 1,031 points, with Middlebury finishing second (767), Dartmouth third (707) and New Hampshire fourth (677).
It took a while before the racing could begin as the harshest of the weather lingered throughout the morning. But shortly before noon, the men hit the slopes, and Zimmer was in fine form, posting the second-fastest time. But his teammates suffered through some struggles with junior
Max Martin producing the next-best Big Green time that left him in 22nd.
Zimmer did not let up on his second tour, once again finishing with the second-best time, but it wasn't quite enough to catch Catamount Cole Palchak, who bested Zimmer's combined time of 1:17.42 by a quarter of a second to win the gold. The second run was kinder to the other Dartmouth skiers as junior
Olof Hedelin nearly matched Zimmer's time to climb 12 spots in the standings into a tie for 14th, and Martin made a modest move up to 18th overall to give the men 97 points. That left the Big Green second to Vermont, which had three of the top five times to win the event handily with 133 points.
In the women's slalom, Resnick raced to the lead on the first run, taking a lead of 0.39 seconds ahead of Vermont's Moa Clementson. Two other Dartmouth skiers were among the top 20 in sophomore
Carly Elsinger in 15th and junior
Olivia Holm in 18th. Resnick continued her fine skiing during the second run with the second-best time, but Clementson did just enough to tie Resnick atop the standings with the two sharing the gold with a combined time of 1:20.32.
Elsinger nearly matched Resnick on the second run, helping her climb five spots into 10th in 1:22.26, and Holm also moved up, ending the day in 14th (1:22.73). The trio ended up amassing 107 points, leaving them in third behind Vermont (131) — thanks to two Catamounts on the podium — and only two behind Middlebury (109).
Both the Nordic and alpine teams will be in action next weekend at the Harvard Carnival, which will take place at Dublin XC and Waterville Valley in New Hampshire on Friday, Feb. 10 and Saturday, Feb. 11.
