PURCHASE, N.Y. — Dartmouth co-captains
Katherine Sung and
Samantha Yao concluded the second day of the Ivy League Women's Golf Championship tied for sixth at 8-over par and helped the Big Green produce the second-lowest score of the day with an 18-over 306. That allowed the team to move up a spot in the standings into fourth at 37-over par (613).
Penn remained in the lead at 27-over par, though Harvard closed to within one stroke, while Princeton ended the day six strokes back and the Big Green still within strikiing distance at 10 back.
Sung had the best day for the Big Green — and second-best score in the 30-player field — with a 1-over 73 that included a pair of birdies. Penn's Bridget O'Keefe was the only player to shoot even par, but Harvard's Isabella Gomez held onto her lead over O'Keefe by a single stroke with a 75 (+3) today to sit at 1-over for the tournament.
"We played in tough conditions with strong winds and cool temperatures all day," said
Alex Kirk, the Carolyn A. Pelzel '54a Head Coach of Women's Golf. "I feel like we are positioned well to make a run tomorrow. We just need to go out early and put up some solid scores and see what happens."
Sung battled back after a slow start that saw her bogey the third hole and double bogey the sixth. But beginning with a par on seven, she played the final 12 holes at 2-under with birdies on a pair of par-5 holes to finish the day with her 1-over 73.
Yao, meanwhile, birdied consecutive holes on five and six before a bogey on seven brought her back to even in the round. Following pars on the next four holes, she ran into some trouble with five bogeys on the final seven holes to end up with a 77 (+5) today.
Matching Yao with a 77 was
Claire Xu, putting her in 18th place with at 12-over 156, and
Kim Shen played a good back nine to card a 7-over 79, leaving her in a tie for 19th at 13-over. Although
Sophie Thai produced an 8-over 80 today, she is tied for 15th overall at 11-over, just three strokes behind Sung and Yao.
The third and final round will tee off tomorrow at 8 a.m. The Big Green will be paired with Columbia (+63) and Yale (+38).
Notes: Dartmouth added seven birdies today and have 18 in the tournament, second only to Penn's 20 … the Big Green have played the par 5 holes at 5-under par, second to Princeton at 8-under.
