ITHACA, N.Y. — The Dartmouth softball team faltered in both sides of a doubleheader against Cornell on Saturday. The Big Green were unable to solve their foe to open their final series of the season, falling by scores of 3-0 and 10-1 in Ithaca, New York.

The Big Green outhit Cornell 14-13Â over the course of both contests. Dartmouth was unable to turn its hits into runs, leaving a combined 13 runners on base through the first two games of the weekend series.

Sophomore pitcher
Rachel McCarroll was stellar for the Big Green in the first game of the afternoon. She struck out nine batters and was impressive throughout her 14th complete-game performance of the season. Despite this strong outing, a lack of offense from the Big Green allowed Cornell to secure the series-opening win.

Game One: Cornell 3, Dartmouth 0
Mary Beth Cahalan recorded the first hit of the day with two outs on the board, as she doubled to place herself in scoring position. She was left stranded, as a groundout on the ensuing at-bat closed the top of the first.

After the Big Red placed runners on second and third, a misplayed ball in the outfield allowed Cornell to push a pair of runs across in the bottom of the opening inning.

The Big Red took a three-run lead on Dartmouth in the bottom of the third. A sacrifice fly brought a runner from third home, as the Big Green's deficit increased to 3-0.

Dartmouth left runners stranded in the fourth and fifth innings, as the Big Green were unable to trim Cornell's lead.

The Big Green were held off the board throughout the rest of game one, as Cornell recorded its first Ivy League shutout of the 2023 season.

McCarroll tied her career-high for strikeouts in a game, as she sent nine batters back in an impressive performance.
Kelly Beaupre registered a pair of hits on three at-bats.

Game Two: Cornell 10, Dartmouth 1 (5 inn.)
Dartmouth kicked off the second game of the twin bill with a pair of hits in the top of the first. Two one-out singles placed runners on first and second. However, a popup and a fielder's choice kept the Big Green off the board.

Cornell took an early 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the opening frame.
Jenna Brown placed herself in scoring position with two away following a single and an error but was stranded following a foul out.

Singles from
Ashley Frantz and
Lauren Ben-Ezra opened the third inning, and both runners were advanced following a wild pitch. Despite having a pair of runners in scoring position with no outs recorded, Cornell maintained its one-run lead, forcing a pair of popups and a strikeout.

The Big Red took advantage of Dartmouth's lack of offense in the bottom of the third. Cornell pushed five runners across and recorded five hits to take a commanding 6-0 lead into the fourth inning.

Dartmouth once again put a pair of runners on base in the top of the fourth, opening the inning with singles from
Maria Angelino and
Leila Hennessy. A strikeout and two groundouts once again left the Big Green empty-handed.

Another eventful half-inning gave the Big Red an emphatic 10-run lead, as a four-hit frame increased Dartmouth's deficit to double-digits.
Alaana Panu batted in her team's lone run of the day in the top of the fifth, but the Big Green were unable to stave off the run-rule loss, falling by a score of 10-1 in five frames.
