HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth head field hockey coach
Mark Egner announced the Big Green's 2023 captains on Wednesday, which includes a second-year captain in fifth-year
Meg Barnes, along with rising senior
Bronwyn Bird. In addition, junior
Piper Edwards and sophomore
Olivia Galiotos have been named to Dartmouth field hockey's expanded leadership council.
"Meg and Bronwyn will make fantastic captains for our team this fall," said Egner. "They were selected by their peers and had stood out as leaders throughout the offseason. As we orient ourselves towards performance, both are people who understand the importance of leading by example, while also being a collaborator. Meg's experience in this role will serve us all well as we attack the new season."
Barnes has been a mainstay in the Dartmouth lineup, starting all 31 games she's appeared in over the last two seasons. After posting four points as a junior in 2021 (one goal, two assists), she had six points as a senior (two goals, two assists). Barnes' goals came in consecutive games vs. Merrimack and at Cornell while dishing assists in consecutive contests against Harvard and UMass Lowell.
Bird was named a second team All-Ivy and an NFHCA second team All-Northeast Region honoree in 2022, becoming Dartmouth's first All-Region selection since 2019. She was a playmaker all over the field in 2022, leading the Big Green in assists (6) and points (12), which both marked career highs. Bird had a point in three of the final four games of the season.
Meanwhile, Galiotos was named honorable mention All-Ivy in the fall. As a center back who started all 17 games and played nearly every minute, she anchored the back line and a defensive unit that allowed just over two goals per game in Ivy League play. Edwards is also a defender who got into 10 games in the fall and recorded an assist on the game's first goal in Dartmouth's 2-1 win over Merrimack.
"Joining Meg and Bronwyn in our expanded leadership group are emerging leaders in our younger classes," said Egner. "Piper and Olivia are conscientious and dedicated to making a positive impact on our team's trajectory. Both have already shown their leadership traits in a variety of ways.
"I'm excited to see our team continue to develop as a leaderful team," Egner continued. "I'm confident that with empowered leaders around the field we can all benefit."
