HANOVER, N.H. – Both teams scored twice in the second half as the Dartmouth women's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw against Eastern Michigan in the season opener on Friday evening at Burnham Field.
Dartmouth (0-0-1) opened the scoring in the 68
th minute off a corner kick.
Mary Lundregan served the corner into the front of goal, and it was tipped out by EMU goalkeeper Ella Holland. The rebound fell out to
Carly Retterer at the top of box, who controlled the ball and struck it through traffic into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal.
The Eagles (0-1-2) equalized minutes later through Arielle Fink. Kate Robinson's shot was saved by
Emily Hardy and Fink crashed the net to put home the tying goal.
The Big Green took back the lead in the 82
nd minute, following up on a rebound of their own. Retterer gained possession in the midfield and brought it nearly 25 yards into the box to create the opportunity for Dartmouth. Retterer took a touch around the EMU defender and fired a shot towards goal and was saved by Holland, but the rebound fell into the path of
Daisy Granholm, who tapped it in to put the Big Green ahead with just over eight minutes to go in the contest.
Eastern Michigan scored the tying goal just over a minute later when Meagan Lukowski took advantage of a high-looping ball in the box, finishing with a header over the Dartmouth defense for her second goal of the season.
It was back and forth for the final seven minutes as both teams looked for the game-winner, but neither side was able to find the difference maker.
The Big Green had several chances to take the lead in the opening 45 minutes. The first opportunity of the night came in the opening moments when Granholm nearly struck the first goal of the year, but the shot went just over the crossbar.
Dartmouth's best chance of the opening frame came with just under 11 minutes remaining.
Frankie Valverde split the midfield with a pass to
Sydney Brown, who sent
Audrey Marin in on goal from a close angle on the right side. Marin ripped a hard shot towards goal, but the shot was stopped by Holland.
Retterer led the way for Dartmouth with one goal and one goal assist with Granholm also tallying her first goal of the season. Hardy made five saves in goal for the Big Green.
Dartmouth hits the road for its next contest, traveling to Quinnipiac for a non-conference matchup on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. and the game will be available to stream on Quinnipiac All-Access.
