Bowman Sends Big Green Home Winners over Merrimack, 4-3 in Overtime

The Big Green finished with a 55-8 edge in shots
HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth field hockey team dominated play, but struggled to pull away from visiting Merrimack as despite a 50-6 edge in shots after 60 minutes of play, the game went to overtime. There, freshman Ella Bowman scored her first-career goal at the biggest moment to give Dartmouth a thrilling 4-3 victory. Bridging the third and fourth quarters, Merrimack scored twice in less than five minutes to take a lead, but fifth year Meg Barnes pulled the Big Green even, setting the stage for Bowman's heroics.
"There are a lot of positives to take from today's game," said Dartmouth head coach Mark Egner. "To be able to produce as much offensive shots and chances as we did is wonderful. It's something that we want to be known for, it's the kind of hockey we want to play here, but we need to be more clinical in the circle. We hit 55 shots today. We're not going to have those opportunities in games. We need to make sure we're doing better with those."
With the win, Dartmouth improves to 2-1, its best record after three games since the 2011 season. The Big Green also enter their Ivy League opener (on Friday at Harvard) with a winning record for the first time since 2010.
It was Merrimack who quickly got on the board, as Lauren Burke converted a sequence of passes into a 1-0 Warriors' lead just 2:31 into the game.
Dartmouth struggled to beat Merrimack goalkeeper Brooke Bolduc, despite firing 11 shots in both the first and second quarters. The Big Green were able to pull even with just 17 seconds left in the half, as senior Bronwyn Bird made a move near the end line and passed across to freshman Riley Dumigan, who put it home to make the score 1-1 after 30 minutes of play.
Just 5:59 into the third quarter, Bird scored a goal for the third time in as many games, this time coming via a direct shot off a penalty corner. It marked her fifth straight game with a point dating back to last season.
When it looked like the Big Green had taken control, Merrimack stormed right back, as Julie West scored at both 42:43 and 47:42, first finishing a rebound before converting a direct shot off a corner. That made it 3-2 Warriors with 12:18 remaining.
Just over three minutes later was when Campaño forced a turnover at midfield, went through a defender's legs and went in towards the circle. Her pass found Barnes, who roofed a perfectly-placed shot below the crossbar to quickly give the Big Green life again.
"It was definitely pretty big, but it was [about] a lot of the little things," said Barnes. "Lucia had an amazing pass, amazing 1v1 to get past her goal and get me the ball, and I was just in the right place at the right time to be able to finish."
Overtime saw Dartmouth hold a 5-2 edge in shots, with the fifth coming off the stick of Bowman on a penalty corner to send the Big Green home winners.
"It was off a short corner," said Bowman. "We worked really hard to get the opportunity to score and I'm just really glad it went in. Great feeling to get the win."
Dartmouth now looks ahead to the Ivy League opener at Harvard, set for Friday, Sept. 15 at 5 p.m.
