BELGRADE, Serbia — Former Dartmouth standouts, and a current student-athlete, wrapped up the 2023 World Rowing Championships on Sunday with strong success. Current senior
William Bender led the way with a fifth-place finish in the men's pair to qualify that boat for the Olympics.
Bender and his pair partner Evan Olson posted a time of 7:02.98 in the final to finish fifth and earn that qualification. The finish means the U.S. will have a men's pair boat in the 2024 Olympics and doesn't necessarily mean Bender and Olson will represent the Red, White and Blue next summer in Paris, as there is a process that will play out.
In the men's eight, Oliver Bub '20 was in the three seat, helping the United States reach the grand final where it placed sixth overall, narrowly missing a top five finish and Olympic qualification. In the final, the Red, White and Blue posted a time of 5:29.18, less than three seconds behind Australia in third (5:26.65). Great Britain finished first (5:24.20) followed by the Netherlands (5:25.23). Romana came in fourth (5:27.57) followed by Germany in fifth (5:28.39).
Meanwhile, Liam Keane '21 helped Canada reach the B final of the men's eight, placing second in that race with a time of 5:34.10, only trailing Italy (5:32.24). Molly Reckford '15 rowed in the women's quadruple sculls, as the United States finished fifth in the B final with a time of 6:33.41. It was a tight race, as they were just over six seconds behind Germany in first.
