Big Green Open Season with Resounding 6-1 Win Over Stonehill

Olivia Galiotos and Riley Dumigan each scored their first collegiate goals in the victory
HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth field hockey team scored two goals before the game was eight minutes old, then after Stonehill pulled within one in the third quarter, the Big Green responded with four unanswered goals over the game's final 21 minutes to wrap up a 6-1 season-opening win on Sunday at Chase Field. Senior Lila Browne led the offense with two goals while senior Bronwyn Bird and sophomore Olivia Galiotos each posted a goal and assist. Dartmouth's six goals on the day marked its most in nearly seven years, since scoring seven against Bryant on Sept. 10, 2017.
"First of all, it was exciting to get back on the field," said head coach Mark Egner, who is now 2-1 in season openers at Dartmouth. "To be able to start like we did, to be able to generate such offensive production and to limit them to no shots in the first half, all those things were really exciting for us. This is a great first step."
"One thing that was really exciting is we all moved really well off each other, and we're doing a good job connecting in the circle, which is how I scored today," said Browne. " It was all about my teammates and I was just in the right place to finish their passes."
Meanwhile, the Dartmouth defense stood tall, not allowing a single shot until the second half. That 2-0 score stood until 6:36 into the third quarter when the Skyhawks pulled within 2-1 off a penalty corner.
However, the Big Green answered with a vengeance. Just 2:30 later, Bird made a move on the end line and beat Stonehill goalkeeper Shannon Conte from a tough angle, giving Dartmouth a 3-1 lead heading to the fourth.
In the fourth, the Big Green left no doubt. Less than two minutes into the quarter, a pair of freshmen connected as Lucia Campaño made an impressive move carrying towards the circle, going through multiple Stonehill defenders. She then fed classmate Riley Dumigan, who made a touch past Conte. It marked the first-collegiate assist for Campaño and goal for Dumigan.
"We're excited about the way we were able to share the goals around on the team," said Egner. "It was exciting to see everybody step up, different people take that role and that ownership."
Final shots were 24-7 in favor of the Big Green. Stonehill outshot Dartmouth 7-4 in the third quarter, but the Big Green held a 20-0 edge over the other three, including 11-0 in the fourth. The Skyhawks had four penalty corners to Dartmouth's three. Sophomore Ava Carlson made two saves in goal for her first-collegiate win while Conte of Stonehill tallied 11.
Dartmouth returns home next weekend for two more games, hosting Quinnipiac on Friday at 3 p.m. and Merrimack next Sunday at 12 p.m.
