Quinnipiac Scores Late Goal to Edge Big Green, 2-1

Bronwyn Bird scored for a second straight game
HANOVER, N.H. — After a scoreless first half, both Dartmouth and Quinnipiac scored before the second half was four minutes old, but it was the Bobcats who broke a 1-1 tie with just 5:51 remaining to defeat the Big Green field hockey team, 2-1 on Friday afternoon at Chase Field. Senior Bronwyn Bird scored Dartmouth's goal on an impressive individual effort while sophomore goalkeeper Ava Carlson was strong in tallying seven saves, just one from tying a career high. With the loss, Dartmouth falls to 1-1 while Quinnipiac improves to 1-2.Â
"It was nice for us to get out and take the lead," said Dartmouth head coach Mark Egner. "A lovely moment of individual brilliance from Bronwyn Bird to get that first goal. This is a team we've struggled with in the past, and for it to be as tight a game as it felt at times, was great. But we had some real lapses in composure, some times when we let either the emotion or the moment get to us and things got away from us.Â
"That's something we need to tighten up and get better, and that will come with experience."
The first quarter saw the Big Green hold Quinnipiac without a penalty corner, or shot. On the other end, Dartmouth had three shots and five corners of its own, including a stretch of four consecutive corners in the span of 24 seconds late in the quarter. The Big Green were only able to turn those into two shots, however, both of which were blocked.
The second quarter saw Quinnipiac hold a 7-3 edge in shots, with Carlson making her first two saves of the afternoon. They came in succession midway through the period, in the span of five seconds. Earlier in the quarter, senior Lila Browne fired a shot on goal, forcing the Bobcats' Cristina Torres to make her second save of the game.
From there, shots continued as Quinnipiac held an 8-3 edge in the third quarter and 6-2 in the fourth, but Carlson stood tall. She was finally beaten with just under six minutes left in regulation off a corner. Carlson make an incredible diving save to prevent the initial chance, but Tegtmeier was able to put home the rebound.
Dartmouth valiantly tried to pull even, which saw the ball go in at one point off the stick of sophomore Olivia Galiotos, but it came from outside the circle.
Final shots were 21-11 in favor of Quinnipiac while the Big Green held an 11-10 edge in penalty corners. Carlson's seven saves came across the Bobcats' Torres, who made three.
The Big Green will return home on Sunday to host Merrimack at 12 p.m. in the final tune-up before Ivy League play. Sunday is Youth Day, with a postgame autograph session following the contest. Everyone will receive a Dartmouth Field Hockey schedule poster that will be signed by the team. The first 50 students on Sunday will also receive a Big Green friendship bracelet.

Bird would open up the scoring off a restart, carrying near the end line like she did in the season opener vs. Stonehill. And like she did against the Skyhawks, Bird was able to beat the goalkeeper from a tough angle. This time, it gave Dartmouth a 1-0 lead just 2:47 into the second half. It marked Bird's fourth straight game with a point dating back to the end of last season (assists in each of the final two games of 2022 and goals in each of the first two games of 2023).We are scoreless at the half. Quinnipiac held a 7-3 edge in second-quarter shot, including this sequence which saw Ava Carlson stand tall in goal.

Quinnipiac took the momentum back only 1:02 later, quickly earning its first corner of the second half and turning it into the equalizer. Stella Tegtmeier scored her first of two on the day, finishing off a strong sequence of passes.Bronwyn Bird gave us a 1-0 lead off the restart, but Quinnipiac responded not long after and we are tied at one as we head to the fourth quarter!

"We started off really strong and we've proven what type of team we can be — with passing, dribbling and overall 100 percent effort — and it's really beautiful out there," said Bird.
