HANOVER, N.H. – A goal from
Cooper Flinton midway through the first cut into the Union two-goal lead, but the Garnet Chargers scored three goals over the final 20:18 of the game to claim a 5-1 victory over the Dartmouth men's hockey team on Friday evening in ECAC Hockey action.
Â
The Big Green fall to 4-7-6, 2-4-4 while the Garnet Chargers improve to 10-11-1, 5-5-1.
Â
Union opened the scoring inside seven and a half minutes to start the game through a goal from Ben Tupker. The Garnet Chargers added to their total 90 seconds later when Liam Robertson found the back of the net for the third time this season.
Â
Flinton scored his seventh goal of the season to cut into the Union lead midway through the first period. After a play for the puck alongside the boards,
Tucker McRae ended up with the puck and fired a shot from the point that was saved by Union goaltender Kyle Chauvette. However, Chauvette was unable to hold onto the puck and Flinton followed up on the rebound from close range and smashed it home. McRae and
Steven Townley picked up their first assists of the season on the goal.
Â
The Big Green had a flurry of chances on the power play midway through the second period. Flinton and
Cam MacDonald both had great scoring changes in front of the net, but Chauvette was able to make the saves to keep the Garnet Chargers ahead by a goal.
Â
The Garnet Chargers nearly added to the lead with just over four minutes remaining in the second when they hit the pipe twice four seconds apart. Sandwiched in-between that was a highlight reel save from
Roan Clarke as he made a diving stick save just before the puck was about to cross the line.
Union scored late in the second and early in the third, in just one minute of game time, to make it a 4-1 game. The Garnet Chargers later scored an empty net goal to bring their total to five.
Â
Clarke made 28 saves in his home debut for the Big Green.
