John Kenfield and Chuck Kinyon Head Coach Justin DeSanto earned his first Dartmouth victory

HANOVER, N.H.— Winning its season opener for the 11th consecutive year, the Dartmouth men's tennis team cruised to a 7-0 sweep against defending MAAC champion Siena on Saturday at Boss Tennis Center. The win gave first-year John Kenfield and Chuck Kinyon Head Coach Justin DeSanto his first Dartmouth victory.

"A great win for the Big Green today," DeSanto said. "Siena was loud and ready to play from the first point, but our guys went to work early in the doubles and kept it going throughout singles. It feels good to grab the first win of the season and the first dual match win as the head coach of the Big Green. I'm proud of the guys and the way they competed. Only dropping one set on the day says a lot about the focus they had for today's season opener."

The doubles point comfortably sided with the Big Green, and Waleed Qadir and Miles Groom were able to seal it at the No. 2 position with a 6-2 win over Siena's Maxwell Acri and Duarte Melo. Hikaru Takeda and Carlos Guerrero Alvarez quickly defeated Andrea Moro and Zino Varouhas-Poole at No. 3.

In singles, Ren played at the No. 1 position for the first time and set the tone with a straight-sets win over Fabio Varella. Guerrero Alvarez, Groom, first-year Yujiro Onuma and Alex Knox-Jones each followed suit with two-set triumphs. Takeda, at the No. 3 position, downed Oscar Martinez in a 10-point tiebreak.

"It was great to see Yujiro get his first career dual match win," DeSanto added. "I loved how the guys rallied around him and celebrated with him."

The Big Green face an early-season test in the form of Big Ten opponent Indiana on Friday, Jan. 26 inside Boss Tennis Center. Dartmouth is looking to avenge last season's 5-2 loss that came in the Hoosier State.
