Troy, N.Y. – The RPI Engineers came out of the first period with a 3-0 lead, and despite a power-play goal early in the third period, the Big Green were not able to make a comeback, ultimately falling 5-1 to RPI in ECAC Hockey action.
With the loss, the Big Green fall to 5-15-2 on the season and 2-11-2 in ECAC Hockey contests, whereas the Engineers move to 10-14-3 overall and 3-13-0 in conference play.
The Engineers scored five straight goals before the Big Green were able to get on the board.
Their first goal came just under seven minutes into the period on the power play due to a tripping call. Just over seven minutes later, they lit the lamp again. Their first period momentum did not stop there though, as the Big Green received a major penalty, giving the Engineers an opportunity to put more goals on the board. They scored one goal on the five-minute major before the first period ended, extending their lead to three.
The Engineers added two more goals, one nine minutes into the second period and one less than two minutes into the third, making the score 5-0.
Just under two minutes after the Engineers fifth goal, they committed a body checking penalty to send the Big Green on a power play. With one second to spare on the advantage,
Tiffany Hill was able to find the back of the net from
Lauren Messier and
Shae Messner to put the Big Green on the board. The lone goal was not enough to spark momentum as the Engineers held on for the 5-1 victory.
Hann Humphreys made their fourth straight start for the Big Green, stopping 31 of the 36 shots they faced.
The Big Green will be on the road again next weekend, travelling to Cornell and Colgate to continue the stretch of ECAC Hockey matchups. Puck drop on Friday against Cornell is scheduled for 6 p.m. while the Saturday matchup with Colgate is slated for 3 p.m. Both games will be available to stream on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet.
