CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—The Dartmouth women's rugby team improved to 5-0 on Saturday with a 26-19 win over rival Harvard.
The opening half saw back and forth play with both teams battling for field position. Both teams made stops at their respective try lines to keep the game scoreless.
With less than 10 minutes remaining in the half, the Big Green broke the ice and opened the scoring. Jordan Duncan took a quick pass from Vanessa Ortiz-Pallen and made one final defender miss with a juke and dove into the try zone to give the Big Green a 5-0 lead.
Neither team scored in the final minutes of the opening half and Dartmouth took a 5-0 lead into halftime.
With 27:30 left in regulation the Crimson scored and hit a conversion to take a 7-5 lead.
Less than seven minutes later, the Big Green took the lead back. Duncan picked up the ball off a ruck and powered through a trio of Crimson defenders to find the try zone for her second try of the game. Following the try, Annie Henrich hit the conversion to give Dartmouth a 12-7 lead.
Harvard tied the game at 12 with 15:30 left in the second half.
With less than 10 minutes left on the clock the Big Green took another lead. First year Jordynn LeBeau took the ball right to the try line but came up just short. Vasiti Turagavou picked up the ball off the ruck and dove into the try zone. Henrich then hit the conversion to give Dartmouth a 19-12 lead.
The Crimson once again responded with 2:45 left in regulation to tie the game at 19.
With about 50 seconds remaining in regulation, Josie Harrison found a loose ball on the try line after Henrich came up just short of the try zone. Harrison picked up the ball and dove into the try zone. Henrich stepped up and drilled the conversion to make it 26-19 Dartmouth.
Dartmouth controlled the ball to close out the game as Harvard could not mount a stoppage time comeback.
The Big Green are now 5-0 this season and sit atop the NIRA standings, Dartmouth is the only undefeated team in NIRA.
Dartmouth has won four of the last six matchups with Harvard. All-time, Dartmouth is 13-5 against Harvard all-time.
The Big Green are back in action on Oct. 26 as they travel to Quinnipiac to take on the Bobcats.
