Dartmouth will be home twice next weekend looking to rebound

HANOVER, N.H. — Vermont scored just 26 seconds into Sunday's contest and wouldn't look back, scoring seven times to defeat the Dartmouth field hockey team, 7-0. The Catamounts' first four goals, and five for the game, came off penalty corners, and despite the Big Green firing five shots on goal in the fourth quarter, they couldn't find the back of the net.
Â
"Our penalty corner defense wasn't good enough today," said Dartmouth head coach Mark Egner. "We gave away too many opportunities from set pieces that we should be able to control, but those come from somewhere. They come from a turnover or a missed tackle or a missed trap somewhere else on the field."
Â
Vermont added a second goal at the 4:07 mark before scoring twice in the second to take a 4-0 halftime lead. The Catamounts held a 9-5 edge in shots after 30 minutes of play.
Â
UVM kept the momentum going in the third, outscoring Dartmouth 7-1, including 4-0 in shots on goal. The Catamounts scored a goal off a penalty corner, but first-year Big Green goalkeeper Isabel Andrews stood tall with five saves in the stanza.
Â
Dartmouth posted a 6-4 edge in shots in the fourth (5-3 in shots on goal), but Vermont tacked onto its lead with two more. Meanwhile, Catamounts' goalkeeper Merle Vaandrager posted five of her seven saves over the final 15 minutes of play.
Â
Final shots were 20-12 in favor of Vermont while the Catamounts held an 11-7 edge in penalty corners. Andrews finished with 10 saves between the pipes. Lucia Campaño led the Big Green with four shots.
Â
"This weekend as a whole has been really disappointing for us as a program and it's nowhere near the reflection of who we want to be," said Egner. "I think too often, we were getting into difficult situations and thinking we had to work on our own to solve them. We need to find a way to come together as a team, we need to find a way to start to start to collaborate, work together to solve these things rather than breaking down in individualistic moments.
Â
"Ultimately, we need to take a deep breath, reflect and come out tomorrow with the attitude to get better."
Â
The Big Green return home for two next weekend, hosting Yale on Friday (2 p.m.) and Colgate on Sunday (12 p.m.).
