HAMDEN, Conn.—The Dartmouth men's hockey team traveled to No. 15 Quinnipiac on Friday night to take on the Bobcats. The Big Green skated away with a 4-2 win to improve to 3-0-0 on the season.
The first period yielded no goals as Dartmouth goalie Roan Clarke made eight saves in the opening period as the Big Green won nine of 17 faceoffs.
The Big Green opened the scoring at the 7:52 mark of the second period. The trio of Jack Silverberg, Steven Townley, and Alex Krause forced a turnover at the Quinnipiac blueline. Silverberg controlled the puck and fed it to Krause. Krause skated into the slot and wristed home his first goal of the season to give Dartmouth a 1-0 lead.
Less than four minutes later, the Big Green were back on the board. At the 11:27 mark, Cooper Flinton blocked a shot that led to a two on one for Sean Chisholm and Nikita Nikora. The duo traded passes with Chisholm scoring his second goal of the season to put the Big Green up 2-0.
The Bobcats got on the board on the power play with less than a minute remaining in the second period.
Dartmouth tallied seven shots in the second period while Quinnipiac was limited to three shots on goal.
At the 7:00 mark of the third period, Quinnipiac tied the game at two.
Nine minutes later at the 16:00 mark, the Big Green were on the power play following the third period media timeout. The faceoff was deep in the Quinnipiac zone and the Big Green controlled the puck following a faceoff win. CJ Foley and Nikora played catch with the puck before Nikora found John Fusco in the high slot. J.Fusco took a wicked wrister that beat the goalie for his second goal of the season. Nikora picked up his fourth assist of the season.
Just 55 seconds later, Foley scored an empty netter to make it a two goal Dartmouth lead.
The Big Green held off the late push from the Bobcats to improve to 3-0-0.
Clarke made 18 saves in the win as he improved to 2-0-0 on the season.
Dartmouth went 24-21 in the faceoff circle with Chisholm leading the way with a 16-8 record.
Dartmouth lasted defeated Quinnipiac on Nov. 3, 2018 at Thompson Arena. The Big Green last won in Hamden in the regular season in the 2006-07 season.
It is the first time that Dartmouth has defeated a ranked team since defeating No. 7 Clarkson on Jan. 17, 2020 at Thompson Arena. Dartmouth last defeated a ranked opponent on the road on Jan. 20, 2018 against No. 2 Clarkson.
Dartmouth has opened the season 3-0-0 for the first time since the 1978-79 season. The Big Green ended the season with a 19-9-2 record.
The Big Green close out the weekend on Saturday in Princeton, N.J. as they take on Princeton at 7 p.m. The game can be viewed on both ESPN+ and regionally on SNY.
