HANOVER, N.H.—No. 17 Dartmouth men's hockey tied in-state rival New Hampshire on Friday night to close out the first half of the 2024-25 season. Following the 3-3 tie, the Big Green sit at 6-3-2 overall.
The first period saw four goals with the Big Green holding a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes.
Dartmouth opened the scoring just over two minutes into the game at the 2:03 mark. The duo of Cam MacDonald and Braiden Dorfman forced a bad pass from a UNH defender and Hank Cleaves picked up the puck near center ice. The first year skated into the UNH zone and wristed home his first collegiate goal to make it 1-0.
At the 11:21 mark of the opening frame, the Big Green doubled their lead. John Fusco fired a stretch pass to Hayden Stavroff, Stavroff gained the zone with Sean Chisholm going to the back door., Stavroff was briefly poke checked but regained the puck and fired a pass to Chisholm on the backdoor. Chisholm rifled home his seventh goal of the season to make it 2-0. Stavroff picked up his third assist while J. Fusco notched assist number four.
The Wildcats made it a 2-1 game with just over three minutes remaining in the opening period.
Dartmouth responded 59 seconds later as Steven Townley netted his fourth goal of the year. MacDonald forced a turnover on the forecheck, and the puck squirted out to Townley in the right faceoff circle. Townley took a wrister that beat the goalie five hole to give Dartmouth a 3-1 lead.
The Big Green went 13-8 in the faceoff circle in the opening period.
Just 3:39 into the second period, the Wildcats made it a one goal game off a rebound goal.
With 55 seconds remaining in the middle frame, the Wildcats tied the game at three on a breakaway goal.
After 40 minutes of play, the two teams were tied at three.
The third period saw 14 combined shots with UNH holding a slight edge at 8-6 but neither team found the back of the net. The Big Green hit the post twice in the third period.
In the overtime period both teams had possessions but neither team yielded a goal.
The game officially ended in a tie with UNH winning the shootout 1-0.
Roan Clarke made 27 save in net for the Big Green.
Dartmouth went 39-25 in the faceoff circle for a 60.9 winning percentage. Chisholm went 15-9 in the circle while Townley went 12-5.
Chisholm and Dorfman each skated in their 100th career games on Friday night against UNH.
There were no penalties accessed in the game, it is the first time that Dartmouth has not committed a penalty in a game since March 8, 2019, in a 3-2 win over St. Lawrence at Thompson Arena.
Dartmouth now enters the holiday break before returning to Thompson Arena on Saturday Dec. 28 for the 35th Annual Ledyard Classic. Dartmouth plays Alaska Anchorage at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 28 before playing either Northeastern or Providence to close out the tournament on Sunday, Dec. 29 at 7:30 p.m. To buy tickets you can click here.
