HANOVER, N.H.—The No. 17 Dartmouth men's hockey team advanced to the 35th Annual Ledyard Classic Championship game with a 5-4 win over Alaska-Anchorage on Saturday night.
It was the Seawolves who opened the scoring just 4:28 into the opening period to take a 1-0 lead.
63 seconds later, the Big Green answered off a faceoff, Luke Haymes won the faceoff and kicked the puck to Nikora Nikora at the top of the circle. Nikora ripped home his third goal of the year while Haymes notched his first point in his first game of 2024-25.
With just over five minutes left in the opening period, the Seawolves took a 2-1 lead.
Dartmouth came out of the locker room for the second period and tied the game at two just 4:11 into the frame. The Big Green won a battle on the sidewall and Cooper Flinton picked up the loose puck and wristed home his fourth goal of the year. Hayden Stavroff and Sean Chisholm picked up assists on the play.
The back-and-forth play continued as Anchorage took the 3-2 lead just over two minutes later.
The Big Green answered once again at the 7:57 mark of the second period. Braiden Dorfman cutoff an Anchorage breakout and stole the puck before passing it to Cam MacDonald. MacDonald took a shot from just below the faceoff circle and snuck it through the goalie for his third goal of the year.
After two periods of play shots were 12-11 Dartmouth with the score tied at three.
100 seconds into the third period, the Big Green took a 4-3 lead as the Big Green went to work in the Anchorage zone. MacDonald played the puck to Hank Cleaves behind the net and Cleaves went to work. With a defender draped on him, he cut to the slot and toe dragged by a defensemen, he then fired a backhand pass to Dorfman on the backdoor. Dorfman fired the puck into the empty net for his third of the year. Cleaves picked up his third assist of the season while it was MacDonald's fourth.
At the 13:47 mark of the third, Stavroff made it a two-goal lead on a breakaway. Chishom passed the puck up the wall from the Dartmouth zone and Flinton chipped it out of the zone. Stavroff raced for the puck and beat a Seawolf defensemen in a battle for the puck. Stavroff cut to the middle of the ice and wristed home his seventh goal of the year.
With an extra attacked on the ice, Anchorage got to within one goal at the 16:17 mark of the third but could not tie the game.
Roan Clarke made 12 saves in relief as he played the final 33:45 of the game for the Big Green while picking up his fourth win of the season.
MacDonald, Stavroff, Dofrman, Chisholm, and Flinton all tallied two points in the win.
For MacDonald, it's his second straight multi point game and his third of the season. Stavroff has three multi point games this season. He has now recorded at least a point in four straight games.
It is the first time this season that Dorfman has put up multiple points, he has 11 multi point games in his career. Chisholm has tallied multiple points in five games this season as he has 14 points in 12 games this season. Flinton has three multi point games this season as he now has 11 points.
The Big Green blocked nine shots in the game four coming with less than two minutes remaining in the third. Chisholm had three blocks to lead the team while Flinton had two.
Dartmouth went 33-13 in the faceoff circle winning 71.7% of draws. Chisholm went 17-3 while Cleaves, Haymes, and Steven Townley all won five faceoffs.
It is the first time in program history that Dartmouth has defeated a team from Alaska.
Haymes made his season debut and tallied an assist, three shots on goal, and five faceoff wins.
Nikora leads the team with 15 points while Chisholm has 14 points.
Dartmouth takes on No. 7 Providence on Sunday in the Ledyard Classic Championship. Providence defeated Northeastern in the opening game on Saturday 3-1. The Big Green look for their ninth Ledyard title with faceoff scheduled for 7:30 PM at Thompson Arena. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ while also be televised in the New England Region on NESN.
