HANOVER, N.H.—The No. 13 Dartmouth men's hockey team lost a back and forth game to No. 20 Clarkson on Saturday night. Despite outshooting Clarkson the Big Green fell 3-2.
Clarkson opened the scoring at the 12:01 mark of the opening period as the puck fluttered over Emmett Croteau from a point shot.
The Big Green responded at the 16:23 mark while on the power play. Dartmouth held control of the puck in the Clarkson zone. CJ Foley held the puck in and fed it to Nikita Nikora in the right faceoff circle. Nikora held the puck and then fired a pass to Cooper Flinton in the low slot. Flinton redirected the puck by the goalie for his third goal of the season. Nikora picked up his team leading 12th assist while Foley picked up assist number nine.
The teams went to the locker room tied at one with shots in favor of Clarkson 9-6.
Just ahead of the midway mark of the second period, the Golden Knights took a 2-1 lead as they converted on a Dartmouth turnover.
Dartmouth once again responded before the end of the period. Alex Krause deflected a puck in the neutral zone back to Foley deep inside the Dartmouth zone. Foley saw Hayden Stavroff streaking down the left wall and hit him with a perfect pass. Stavroff took the long pass at the Clarkson blueline and ripped home his sixth goal of the season from the left faceoff dot. It was Foley's 10th assist of the year while it was Krause's second.
After 40 minutes of play the teams were tied at two with Dartmouth holding a 15-13 shot advantage.
At 5:52 mark of the third period, it appeared the Krause had given the Big Green 3-2 lead with less than six minutes remaining. However, Clarkson challenged the play and the play was deemed offsides.
With 2:55 left in the third period, Clarkson took a 3-2 lead off another broken play inside the Dartmouth zone.
The Golden Knights held off the final push from Dartmouth and held on for the 3-2 win.
Croteau made 15 saves in the loss, his goals against average sits at just 1.81 through four starts.
The Big Green dominated in the faceoff circle as they went 35-19 as a team. Steven Townley and Sean Chisholm each won 14 faceoffs with Townley going 14-4 and Chisholm 14-8.
Foley extended his point streak to nine games as he added two assists.
