HANOVER, N.H. —
Cwen Wilson stepped up to the plate with two outs and none on in the bottom of the sixth against Boston University, currently No. 23 in the USA Today/NFCA Top 25, and smacked an opposite-field solo home run to reclaim the lead in what would be a 5-4 statement victory for the Dartmouth softball team on Tuesday afternoon. It's the Big Green's first victory over a ranked opponent since the 2015 season opener (4-2 over No. 16 Auburn).Â
Â
"I needed to do something with the ball," said Wilson, recounting her mindset during her late-game at-bat before hitting her first career home run. "It felt so good and I knew it was gone immediately. Everyone was super excited and it was an amazing feeling."
Â
Wilson's shot broke a dry spell for the Big Green, who hadn't scored a run since the first inning. Trailing 1-0,
Olivia Schramm's first-inning double scored both
Allie Ohde and
Kelly Beaupre to hand Dartmouth a 2-1 lead.
Justice Malone, the next batter, ripped a single into centerfield two score two more as
Leila Hennessy and Schramm crossed the plate. The beginning stages of the two-out rally included walks drawn by
Kelly Beaupre and Hennessy, and a single by
Allie Ohde. Midway through the inning, Boston University turned to ace Kasey Ricard, who leads the nation in shutouts, to handle pitching duties for the remainder of the contest.
Â
Two-time reigning Ivy League Pitcher of the Week
Jensin Hall entered the game in the fourth inning and would pick up her fifth victory of the season, allowing just three hits to the Terriers, whose team batting average (.330) ranks 15th in Division I. Hall took over for
Rachel McCarroll, who allowed a pair of earned runs in three and a third innings.
Â
Ohde was 2-for-3 at the plate for the Big Green, who tallied six hits on the afternoon. Boston University was powered by Lauren Keleher, who was 3-for-3 with two RBIs to help the Terriers outhit Dartmouth 11-6. Starting pitcher Allison Boaz's fourth-inning solo shot handed brought Boston University within one, and Keleher's sixth-inning RBI single knotted the game at 4-4.
Â
The Big Green are home once again this weekend, hosting Brown for a three-game Ivy League series that starts with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 6.
