PHILADELPHIA — The Dartmouth softball team stayed hot on Sunday afternoon, completing a series sweep of Penn with a 7-1 victory – the Big Green's sixth straight – behind more explosive offense and excellent pitching from
Jensin Hall.
Dartmouth has won each of its last nine over Penn, dating back to the 2022 season.
Leading 4-1 entering the sixth inning, the Big Green emphatically pulled away with two home runs.
Leila Hennessy led the inning with her first homer of the season, and five batters later, it was
Mary Beth Cahalan with a two-run shot that handed Dartmouth a commanding 7-1 advantage. Totaling 12 hits, Dartmouth received two-hit performances from Cahalan, Hennessy,
Allie Ohde and
Cwen Wilson. Wilson and
Ashley Frantz matched Cahalan with two RBIs.
In the circle,
Jensin Hall limited the Quakers to three hits while striking out nine. Penn mustered its lone run of the ballgame in the third inning, able to string together a couple walks and a Sammy Fenton single. Hall allowed just one hit for the remainder of the contest after that run was scored.
Dartmouth plated its first run of the game in the second inning when Frantz delivered a two-out single to score Hennessy. After Penn's third-inning tally, Ohde hit a lead-off single to start the fourth before
Justice Malone ripped a double into the right-center gap. Ohde scored on Wilson's single, and Malone would come home on Frantz's sacrifice fly.
The Big Green, who boast the longest active winning streak in the Ivy League with one series remaining until the postseason, scored a total of 24 runs across the three-game sweep. Malone was a big part of that offensive success, hitting .556 (5-for-9) over the weekend, while Hennessy and
Kelly Beaupre notched five RBIs apiece.
Sitting in fourth place in the Ivy League, the Big Green look to clinch a spot in the tournament next weekend when they host Columbia for a three-game series that kicks off with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 4. The Ivy League Tournament will include the Ancient Eight's top four teams and will be hosted by the top seed.
