Big Green Clinch Ivy League Tournament Bid, Sweep Doubleheader in Historic Fashion

After taking the opener, 3-1, Dartmouth erupted for 22 runs in the nightcap as the winning streak stretched to eight
HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth softball team clinched a spot in the Ivy League Tournament with its Game 1 victory over Columbia before exploding for a program-best 22 runs in the second game of the series, emphatically securing the doubleheader sweep. Only the final game, Sunday's regular season finale, stands between the Big Green and a share of the Ivy League Championship.
A Dartmouth victory tomorrow would mean a four-way tie between Princeton, Harvard, Yale and the Big Green, and Dartmouth's fourth Ivy League title in program history.
The Big Green ride the momentum of an eight-game winning streak into Sunday's high-stakes showdown.
With a Princeton victory going final moments after Dartmouth's Game 1 triumph, the Big Green were guaranteed an Ivy League Tournament bid. The four-team tournament began just a season ago and will feature Dartmouth for the first time. The 2024 iteration will take place at Princeton and begins Thursday, May 9.
Not to be lost in the shuffle of historic numbers and milestones, Saturday also served as the Big Green's Senior Day. Both seniors, Kelly Beaupre and Mary Beth Cahalan, hit home runs in what will be looked back on as a storybook day in Hanover.
GAME 1 • Dartmouth 3, Columbia 1
Columbia grabbed an early lead on Jensin Hall and the Big Green, but one swing of the bat would change the complexion of Saturday's opener. With Dartmouth trailing 1-0 in the fifth, Cahalan jacked her first home run of the day – a no-doubter over the left field fence – to tie the game and energize the Hanover crowd.
Cwen Wilson, no stranger to clutch moments having hit the go-ahead homer to defeat nationally ranked Boston University earlier this season, turned in another key late-game hit with her two-run, two-out double in the sixth that handed Dartmouth a 3-1 lead. Hall had all the support she needed at that point, setting the Lions down in order during the seventh to earn her 10th win of the season.
Hall went the distance and struck out eight while allowing just three hits. Columbia loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth, but the first-year escaped with only the lone run allowed thanks to a couple key strikeouts.
Olivia Schramm's leadoff walk, and later Allie Ohde's single, set the stage for Wilson's two-out double that proved to be the difference maker. Ohde had two of the Big Green's four hits.
Hall is now 12 strikeouts away from matching Christine Quattrocchi '03 for the most strikeouts in a season by a freshman pitcher. Quattrocchi finished the 2000 campaign with 169 and was named Ivy League Pitcher of the Year.
GAME 2 • Dartmouth 22, Columbia 1
Topping the previous mark of 20 runs scored against Brown in 2011, the Big Green racked up 20 total hits, capped off by Beaupre's three-run shot, to put an exclamation point on an already memorable afternoon.
Alaana Panu, Cahalan and Beaupre each had three hits, and Beaupre claimed the team lead in RBIs with four. Everyone in the lineup had at least one hit. Jenna Brown, who made her first appearance of the season last weekend at Penn, took her first home at-bat since 2023 and ripped a single up the middle, much to the delight of the home crowd.
The Big Green, who needed more than three innings to notch their first hit in Game 1, wasted no time lighting up the scoreboard in Game 2. A nine-run first that sent 15 batters to the plate had the doubleheader sweep all but wrapped up. That inning featured seven hits, including Cahalan's leadoff double. She would finish the contest just a triple shy of the cycle.

Columbia scored its first run in the third inning with Maddie Souza's RBI triple. Rachel McCarroll comfortably picked up her seventh win of the season, tossing all five innings.
