LAS VEGAS — The Dartmouth women's golf team put forth a solid first day of the NCAA Regional in Las Vegas on Monday, shooting 14-over-302 on the day, which is good for 11th place, ahead of five-time defending BIG EAST Champion Xavier by eight strokes and just 10 strokes behind Baylor in fifth place. Top five is important in regionals as those teams at the end of Wednesday will advance to the NCAA Championship behind held May 17-22 in Carlsbad, California.
Three Big Green — senior Katherine Sung, sophomore Sophie Thai and first-year Caroline Chung — led the way on Monday, each tying for 38th in shooting 3-over-75.
"I'm very happy how we played," said Alex Kirk, Carolyn A. Palzel '54 Head Coach of Women's Golf. "I think in the beginning, we were a little pumped up. A couple players hit it over the first or second green they played, made some doubles, but I think we settled down. Overall, the play was good. There are a few places where course strategy will help tomorrow and a little putting we could correct."
Rounding out the Big Green on day one were senior Penelope Tir tied for 50th at 5-over-77 and sophomore Kim Shen tied for 61st at 9-over-81.
"We're within striking distance," said Kirk. "I think we shot it about three or four over our average on a very tough golf course. It's about 300 yards longer than we play. Today was a great first day and we're looking forward to tomorrow; hopefully we can correct a few things and play."
After day one, Arkansas is in first at 8-under-280 followed by Florida State (5-under-283), Purdue (4-under-284), UCLA (3-over-291) then Baylor (4-over-292).
The second round is set for Tuesday with the Big Green's first tee time set for 8:55 a.m. locally (11:55 a.m. ET).
