SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—Dartmouth men's hockey opened its four-game road trip with a 4-0 win over Union on Friday night. Dartmouth improves to 9-6-2 overall and 6-3-1 in ECAC play.
For the 12th time this season the Big Green scored first as John Fusco netted his sixth goal of the season at the 16:59 mark of the opening period. The Big Green had sustained pressure in the Union zone and the puck came loose in the corner following a Cam MacDonald check. Braiden Dorfman picked up the loose puck and fired it to J.Fusco in the high slot, J. Fusco one-timed it into the back of the net to give Dartmouth a 1-0 lead.
After the first period, the Big Green led 1-0 after outshooting Union 11-7.
In the second half of the second period, the Big Green struck again. At the 14:41 mark while on the power play Luke Haymes took a pass from Nikita Nikora. Haymes drove to the net and lost the puck as he was checked to the ice. The puck went to Cooper Flinton who fired a puck towards the net. After a few seconds of not knowing where the puck was it fell out of the corner of the cage. Flinton notched his sixth goal of the year while Haymes picked up his second assist and Nikora notched his team leading 14th assist.
There were a combined nine shots in the second period with Dartmouth edging out Union 5-4.
Down two goals late in the third period, Union pulled its goalie. At the 17:42 mark of the frame, Haymes flipped the puck out of the zone and MacDonald trucked through a Union defensemen for the loose puck. MacDonald buried his fourth goal of the year into the empty net. Haymes picked up his second assist of the game and third of the year.
Union took another penalty and put the Big Green on the power play. Dartmouth made them pay with their fourth goal of the night. Matt Fusco found a loose puck in the crease and tapped home his first goal of the year. Alex Krause and Ian Pierce picked up assists on the play.
Emmett Croteau started in net for the Big Green and stopped all 19 shots he faced for his first career shutout. It is the first Dartmouth shutout since Feb. 16, 2023. This season he has a 4-1-0 record, a .907 save percentage and a 1.89 goals against average.
Dartmouth outshot Union 26-19 in the game, the 19 shots tied the season low for Union.
The Big Green went 2-3 on the power play with five shots while the Dartmouth penalty kill was a perfect 2-2 while allowing just three shots.
Both the Fusco brothers scored in the game for the first time in their career. It is the first time since Nov. 4, 2011, that a pair of brothers have both scored in a game for Dartmouth.
Dartmouth is 7-0-1 this season when scoring four or more goals and 17-0-4 in the last two seasons when netting four or more.
The Big Green have now four straight games against Union over the last two seasons.
Dartmouth closes out the first half of its four-game road trip on Saturday night against RPI. Faceoff is scheduled for 7 PM in Troy, N.Y.
