ITHACA, N.Y.—Dartmouth men's hockey completed the season sweep of #20 Cornell on Saturday night in Ithaca. Dartmouth skated to a 6-1 win over the Big Red.
Following a tough 3-2 loss to Colgate on Friday, the Big Green got off to a fast start on Saturday night. Luke Haymes scored the first Dartmouth goal at the 5:53 mark of the first period. CJ Foley took the puck deep inside the Cornell zone and dropped it back to Nikita Nikora. Nikora fired it towards the net, the puck deflected to Haymes in front who scored his fifth of the year.
After the first period, Dartmouth led 1-0 while also outshooting Cornell 7-6.
Just 2:23 into the second period, the Big Green doubled their lead. Trym Løkkeberg won a faceoff back to John Fusco. J. Fusco took a shot from the point and the puck deflected off a Cornell stick and then the crossbar and in for his seventh goal of the year. Løkkeberg notched his first assist of the year.
Less than five minutes later at the 7:11 mark, Dartmouth made it 3-0. Haymes picked up a puck on the halfway of the Cornell zone and cut the slot. He ripped home his sixth goal of the season.
Cornell cut into the Dartmouth lead at the 10:32 mark of the second period.
The Big Green outshot Cornell 11-6 in the second period and had a 18-14 lead in shots after 40 minutes.
8:01 into the third period, Hank Cleaves gave Dartmouth a three-goal lead once again. Nikora skated the puck out of the Dartmouth zone and into the Big Red zone. Nikora set up below the goal line and looked for a pass. The sophomore then fired the puck to the slot, the puck found Cleaves' stick, he made a quick toe drag and fired it into the net for his fifth goal of the year. Nikora notched his 18th assist of the season of the play which is second in the ECAC.
While shorthanded at the 15:41 mark of the third, the Big Red pulled the goalie. Foley lifted the puck from the Dartmouth zone into the empty Cornell goal for his seventh goal of the season.
The Big Green weren't done while shorthanded. 20 seconds later, Sean Chisholm and Cooper Flinton found themselves on a two on one. Chisholm passed it over to Flinton who fired home his eighth goal of the season. Chisholm notched his eighth assist of the season.
Emmett Croteau started in net for the Big Green. The reigning ECAC Goalie of the Week improved to 7-1-0 on the year as he made 16 saves in the win.
Dartmouth outshot the Big Red 30-17 in the game while tallying double digit shots in both the second and third periods.
It is the first time Dartmouth has swept Cornell in a regular season series since the 2014-15 season.
Foley, Haymes, and Nikora each tallied multi point games for the Big Green. Foley finished the weekend with four points (2G, 2A). Haymes had three goals in the two games while Nikora had two assists.
Foley has five points in his last three games, Haymes is currently on a five-game point streak while scoring six goals and adding two assists during that stretch. Nikora has six points in his last five games. Cleaves is currently on a three game point streak with four points in his last three games.
J. Fusco scored his team leading fifth game winning goal of the season, he is tied for the ECAC lead in game winning goals. J. Fusco also became the fourth Big Green player to skate in his 100th career game this season.
The Big Green penalty kill allowed just one shot on four Big Red power plays while scoring two shorthanded goals.
Dartmouth improves to 7-3-0 on the road this season while being 6-1-0 in road ECAC contests.
Eric Charpentier and J. Fusco each finished the game with a plus three rating while Foley, Matt Fusco, Chisholm, and Flinton were all plus two.
The six goals on the road at Cornell are the most goals Dartmouth has scored in Lynah Rink since the Big Green scored 12 goals against Cornell on Jan. 23, 1960.
Dartmouth returns to Thompson Arena following four straight road games next weekend. Friday, Jan. 31 Dartmouth hosts Quinnipiac before hosting Princeton on Saturday, Feb. 1. Both games are scheduled for 7 PM starts and will be streamed on ESPN+.
