NEW HAVEN, Conn.—Dartmouth volleyball fell to Yale in three sets on Friday night in New Haven.
Set One (L, 25-14)
Yale came out swinging in the first set as they took a 9-6 lead after the opening 15 points of the set. The Bulldogs held their three-point lead at the media timeout. After the break, Yale took the next three points which forced a Dartmouth timeout. The timeout did not slow down the Bulldogs as they took the first set 25-14.
Dartmouth had 10 kills in the opening set with Kauany Gutz tallying five kills on eight attempts. Zori Brown had three kills while both Maddie LaFata and Raelie Smith had one to open the match. Both Brown and EllaMae Fitzgerald had five digs in the set, Fitzgerald also had five receptions. Both Sophia Gagnepain and Ellie Mattox had five assists in the first set.
Set Two (L, 25-13)
The second set started with the teams splitting the first 10 points of the set, the close play continued until Yale took a 15-9 lead at the media timeout. Yale took an 18-10 lead after the media timeout which led to a Dartmouth timeout. Yale took seven of the next 10 points to take the set 25-13.
Gutz and Gagnepain had a pair of kills for the Big Green while LaFata and Ava Roberts each added a kill in the set. Seven different players had a dig for the Big Green in the set with Fitzgerald leading the way with three, both Gagnepain and Roberts had two digs for Dartmouth. Both Gutz and Gagnepain had an ace in the set while the duo of Molly Power and Roberts combined for a block.
Set Three (L, 25-21)
The third set was the closest set of the match as the teams were nearly tied at the media timeout, Dartmouth led 15-14. The Big Green had a two-point lead after the media break before the Bulldogs tied the set at 17. After the tie, the Bulldogs took the lead and never let it go.
Dartmouth hit .250 as a team while having 14 kills. Gutz had a team high five kills while LaFata and Roberts each had three kills. The Big Green had three blocks, Brown and Power combined for all three blocks in the set. Mattox had a team high six assists while Gagnepain had four assists.
Gutz had 12 kills to lead Dartmouth while LaFata and Brown each had five kills in the loss. Seven players had a kill for the Big Green while six players had an assist. Mattox had a team best 12 assists while Gagnepain had 11 assists. Brown and Fitzgerald each had a team high 10 digs in the match. Power had four block assists while Brown had three block assists, Roberts added a block assist for Dartmouth. Brown, Gagnepain, and Gutz each had an ace for the Big Green.
Dartmouth continues a three-match road swing on Saturday, Oct. 17 against Brown before traveling to Harvard on Saturday, Oct. 25.
