Field Hockey Falls Following Late Columbia Goal

HANOVER, N.H.—Dartmouth field hockey fell to Columbia 2-1 on Friday afternoon at Chase Field.

The first quarter yielded no goals as the teams were scoreless after the first quarter. There were a combined four shots in the first quarter with three finding the goal. Dartmouth had a pair of shots on goal while Columbia had one shot on goal. The Big Green generated three penalty corners in the first half.

Dartmouth took the lead in the second quarter as the Big Green converted on a penalty corner. First-Year Georgia Thornton inserted the ball to the top of the circle. Senior Olivia Galiotos fired a shot towards the cage; fellow senior Zoe Schaffer got a stick on it and deflected it into the back of the cage for her first goal of the season. It was the second assist of the year for Galiotos.

For the second straight quarter, there were four shots. The lone Columbia shot did not find the cage while all three Dartmouth shots were on goal.

The third quarter was scoreless as both teams had one shot on goal. Each team tallied a penalty corner while both goalies each had a save.

The Big Green held the lead for the majority of the fourth quarter until Columbia scored off a rebound with 5:26 remaining. With just over a minute remaining regulation, the Lions used a Dartmouth turnover to score the eventual game winning goal.

Ava Carlson was in cage for the Big Green. The senior made three saves as she played the entire game for the Big Green for the first time this season.

Riley Dumigan was credited with four shots all of which were shots on goal. Ella Bowman had three shots with two on goal. Both Amelie Luessmann and Galiotos had two shots with one on goa. Schaffer had a pair of shots on goal.

The Big Green return to Chase Field on Sunday, Oct. 5 for a non-conference game against UMass-Lowell. The contest can be watched on ESPN+ and is slated for Noon.
