BOSTON, Mass.—Dartmouth men's hockey opened the 2025-26 regular season on Saturday night in Boston as the Big Green defeated Stonehill 5-2.
The Big Green came out of the gates flying as they outshot the Skyhawks 14-5 in the opening 20 minutes. Dartmouth could not turn the 14 shots into a goal but Dartmouth netminder Roan Clarke turned away all five Stonehill shots. Both teams won 11 faceoffs in the opening period.
3:46 into the second period, the scoreless tie was broken. Hank Cleaves went hard into the Stonehill zone and forced the goalie to turn the puck over. The puck came to Hayden Stavroff in the slot and he hammered home his first goal of the year.
At the 11:02 mark of the fame, the Skyhawks evened the game at one on a power play goal.
Neither team scored for the remainder of the frame as shots were 8-7 Dartmouth in the middle frame.
Just 24 seconds into the third period, the tie was broken as Stavroff won a puck battle on the half-wall in the Stonehill zone. Stavroff dipped around a couple defenders and ripped a wrister home to give Dartmouth a 2-1 lead.
Less than three minutes later, the sophomore completed the hat-trick while on the power play. Dartmouth had the power play set up in the Stonehill zone with CJ Foley quarterbacking it at the top of the zone. Foley fed a pass to the left faceoff circle and Stavoff blasted a one-timer for his third goal of the night.
3:27 later at the 5:30 mark, the line of Cleaves, Stavroff, and Cam MacDonald struck again. MacDonald blocked a clear attempt from the goalie and fed the puck to Cleaves in the slot. Cleaves buried his first goal of the year to make it 4-1.
At the 8:16 mark of the third period, the Dartmouth defense core got in on the scoring as Eric Charpentier made it 5-1 with a one-time blast from the high slot. Charpentier played the puck to Jason Stefanek who fed it back to Charpentier who one-timed home his first of the year. Stefanek picked up his first NCAA point while Jack Silverberg notched his first point of the season with a secondary assist.
With less than five minutes left in the third period, Stonehill scored a second power play goal but the comeback came up short.
The Big Green outshot Stonehill 13-6 in the third period while nearly doubling up the Skyhawks in the game, 35-18. Clarke made 16 saves in net for the Big Green as he faced 18 shots.
Stefanek led the way for the Big Green in the faceoff circle as he went 13-7. Cleaves won 12 draws for the Big Green.
Stavroff is the first Dartmouth player to record a hat-trick since Luke Haymes scored three against Princeton on Feb. 2, 2024.
It is the second straight season that Dartmouth has opened the season with a win. The Big Green are now 2-0-0 all-time against Stonehill and have outscored the Skyhawks 10-5 in the two matchups.
Eight different players had a point for the Big Green with Stavroff and Cleaves each having multiple points. It is the fifth multi-point game for Stavroff in his career and Cleaves' also notched his fifth career multi-point game.
Dartmouth looks to start 2-0 on Sunday as Yale travels to Hanover for a non-conference matchup. Faceoff is slated for 5 PM at Thompson Arena. Fans are encouraged to be in their seats by 4:50 PM as the Big Green will unveil their 2024-25 Ivy League Championship banner.
