Stavroff Scores Four Goals In 7-3 Win
HANOVER, N.H.—The No. 10 Dartmouth men's hockey team improved to 9-0-0 on Friday night with a 7-3 win over ECAC and Ivy League foe Brown at Thompson Arena.
For the first time this season, the Big Green trailed just 2:54 into the opening period as Brown scored the first goal.
The lead was short lived as the Big Green tied the game at the 4:01 mark of the period. Hayden Stavroff scored his eighth goal of the season to tie the game at one. Tucker McRae lifted the puck out of the zone to center ice as Cam MacDonald tipped the puck to Hank Cleaves who left it for Stavroff. Stavroff gained the zone and picked the top right corner for his eighth goal of the year.
Just over three minutes later, the Big Green took the 2-1 lead. H. Cleaves rung the puck around the boards to the point, Colin Grable picked up the puck and fired it towards the net. H. Cleaves went to the net and redirected the shot-pass from Grable into the top corner of the net to make it 2-1. H. Cleaves notched his fourth goal of the season while Grable picked up his second assist, Stavroff was credited with his fifth assist of the season.
With 2:50 left in the opening period, Brown tied the game at two.
The Big Green outshot Brown 14-6 in the opening period while winning the faceoff battle 11-8.
2:08 into the second period, the Big Green took the lead back and never let it go. Andrew Clarke fired a pass to Tim Busconi at the point who fed it his defense partner Matt Fusco. Fusco deked one Bear out before ripping home a wrister for his second goal of the season. Busconi picked up his second assists of the year while it was A. Clarke's fifth.
At the 8:35 mark of the middle frame, Dartmouth made it a two goal game. The Big Green broke the puck out as Nathan Morin hit the red line. He continued into the Brown zone and found Cooper Cleaves who joined the rush. C. Cleaves gave a one touch pass to Nikita Nikora who found open ice in the high slot. Nikora picked the bottom left corner of the net for his second goal of the season. Both C. Cleaves and Morin picked up their third assists of the season.
The Big Green weren't done in the second period, at the 11:58 mark Stavroff scored his second of the night. H. Cleaves gained the zone and dropped the puck to Stavroff who toe dragged a defender before picking the top right corner for his ninth goal of the year.
Dartmouth led 5-2 after 40 minutes of play and were outshooting the Bears 29-12.
Just 2:46 into the third period, Stavroff completed his second hat-trick of the season to give Dartmouth a 6-2 lead. H. Cleaves intercepted a pass and went on the attack. H. Cleaves stopped in the right faceoff circle which opened a passing lane to Stavroff in the far circle. H. Cleaves fed him a pass and Stavroff one-timed home his 10th goal of the season.
Brown scored its third goal of the game at the 4:01 mark of the third period to make it 6-3.
Over 11 minutes later, the Big Green took its four goal lead back as Stavroff scored his fourth of the night. While on the power play, CJ Foley and Stavroff played catch high in the zone with the puck. Stavroff took the puck to the high slot and used a screen to rip home his fourth of the game. Foley picked up his sixth assist while Nikora notched the secondary assist for his eighth apple of the season.
Roan Clarke made 14 saves as he improved to 5-0-0 this season for the Big Green.
The Big Green outshot Brown 41-17, the 41 shots tie the season high for the Big Green (vs Yale, 11/2).
Stavroff is the first Dartmouth player to score four goals in a game since Hugh Jessiman scored four goals against Yale on Nov. 21, 2003. He is also the first Big Green player to tally five or more points in a game since Shane Sellar and Will Graber each had five points against RPI on Feb. 9, 2018.
H. Cleaves had four points for the Big Green while Nikora also tallied a multi-point game. 11 different players had a point for the Big Green.
The Big Green have now scored four or more goals in six of nine games this season. Over the last two seasons, Dartmouth is 19-1-1 when scoring four or more goals.
Dartmouth is 9-0-0 for the first time since the 1942-43 season with the win over Brown.
The Big Green host Yale on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 7 PM to close out the final ECAC weekend of 2025. Fans are encouraged to bring a new and unwrapped toy for Dartmouth Hockey's annual toy drive.
