HANOVER, N.H.—No. 19 Dartmouth men's hockey fell 3-1 to Princeton on Saturday night at Thompson Arena.
The first 10 minutes of play was a back-and-forth battle with both teams bringing physicality and limited stoppages.
At the 11:34 mark of the first period, the Big Green opened the scoring. Trym Løkkeberg had the puck down in the Princeton zone and played the puck up to Ian Pierce on the left point. He fired the puck across to CJ Foley in the high slot. Foley changed the angle and fired a screen shot by the goalie for his eighth goal of the year. Pierce notched his eighth assist of the season and his fourth assist of the weekend. Løkkeberg notched his second assist of the season.
With 50 seconds remaining in the opening frame, the Tigers tied the game at one.
After the first period, shots were tied at eight while score was tied at one.
The second period saw Princeton take a 2-1 lead at the 7:13 mark.
The Big Green won 11 of 18 faceoffs in the second period while generating six shots on goal.
Dartmouth looked to tie the game in the third period but could not find the back of the net. Princeton scored an empty net goal with 51 seconds left in regulation to close out the game.
Roan Clarke made 25 saves in the loss, this season he has an .899 save percentage and a 2.65 goals against average.
As a team, Dartmouth blocked 12 shots with John Fusco, Foley, and Steven Townley each blocking two shots.
Townley went 7-4 in the faceoff circle while Luke Haymes won a game high nine faceoff wins.
Foley is now five game point streak and has the solo lead in the ECAC for points for a defenseman. He has 22 points in 22 games this season, he also leads all ECAC players at +17.
Pierce finishes the weekend with four assists which led all Dartmouth skaters.
Dartmouth announced an attendance of 4,667 which is this sixth largest crowd in Thompson Arena history. It is the largest crowd at Thompson Arena since 4,798 fans packed Thompson on Jan. 10, 1981 to watch a 5-4 Dartmouth win over Cornell.
The Big Green return to Thompson Arena on Friday, Feb. 7 as Harvard travels to Hanover. Puck drop is slated for 7 PM against the Crimson.
