The Big Green Defeats the Crimson 3-2 at Thompson Arena
HANOVER, N.H.—The Dartmouth men's hockey team completed a season sweep of Harvard on Friday with a 3-2 win at Thompson Arena.
The first period didn't yield any goals but the Big Green controlled play and did not allow a Harvard shot on goal until the 11:26 mark of the first period. Overall, the Big Green outshot the Crimson 8-4 in the opening frame. Dartmouth also dominated the faceoff circle going 14-3 to open the game.
Just 1:54 into the second period, the Big Green opened the scoring. The trio of Hayden Stavroff, Hank Cleaves, and Sean Chisholm had a faceoff deep in the Havard zone. Chisholm won the draw and Cleaves tapped it to Stavroff in the slot. Stavroff held the puck and then fired but it was blocked. The rebound came back to him, and he held the puck once again until he was nearing the goal line. The first-year then fired a wrister just inside the post for his eighth goal of the season. Cleaves notched his eighth assist while it was Chisholm's ninth.
The trio was back at it at the 4:52 mark of the second period. On the forecheck Cleave poke checked the puck away on a Harvard breakout. Stavroff gained control of the puck in the corner and saw Chisholm streaking towards the net. Stavroff fired a perfect pass and Chisholm buried his team leading 11th goal of the season. Cleaves picked up his second assist of the game while Stavroff notched his eighth assist of the year.
At the 11:20 mark of the third, the trio scored their third goal of the second period. Cleaves cut off a clearing pass along the half wall. Cleaves delayed and then found Stavroff cutting towards the net. He put the puck on his stick and Stavroff roofed his ninth goal of the year. Cleaves picked up his third assist of the night.
Dartmouth outshot the Crimson 9-7 in the second period.
Harvard cut into the Dartmouth lead at the 6:10 mark of the third and then scored an extra attacker goal with 1:11 left in the third. Despite heavy pressure the Big Green defense core held and secured a 3-2 win.
Emmett Croteau made 19 saves as he notched his seventh win of the season. He now has a 2.26 goals against average this season along with a 7-2-0 record.
Cleaves turned in his first three-point game of his career as he had three assists. Stavroff also notched his first career three-point game with two goals and an assist. The duo is the first duo to put up three points in the same game this season for the Big Green.
Harvard generated 52 shot attempts but only 21 found the goal, Dartmouth blocked 18 shots with Eric Charpentier leading the way with six blocks.
The Big Green dominated the faceoff circle going 32-22. Chisholm was nearly perfect as he went 12-3 on draws.
Dartmouth is 11-6-1 this season when scoring first and 10-1-1 when leading after two periods.
It is the first time that Dartmouth has swept Harvard in the regular season since the 2010-11 season.
The Big Green hit the road as they travel to the North Country of New York to take on Clarkson and St. Lawrence next weekend. Dartmouth first faces Clarkson on Friday, Feb. 14 at 7 PM before closing out the road trip against St. Lawrence on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 7 PM.
