CANTON, N.Y.—The Dartmouth men's hockey fell 3-2 in overtime on Saturday night to St. Lawrence.
The Saints opened the scoring just 1:07 into the game to take an early 1-0 lead.
Dartmouth answered back just 80 seconds later to tie the game at one. The Big Green had control in Saints' zone as John Fusco had the puck in the high slot. He slid the puck to Nate Morgan on the right faceoff circle. Morgan delayed and then took wrist shot through traffic that found the back of the net to tie the game at one. It was Morgan's first goal of the year while J. Fusco notched his eighth assist.
40 seconds later the Big Green took the lead. CJ Foley picked a puck up just inside the blue of the St. Lawrence zone moved to the top of the circle. The sophomore defensemen wristed home his 10th goal of the season to give the Big Green a 2-1 lead.
After three goals in the opening 3:07 neither team scored again until the third period.
At the end of the first, Dartmouth led 2-1 and were outshooting St. Lawrence 10-7. Dartmouth was also 12-3 in the faceoff circle after 20 minutes.
The second period saw 13 combined shots along with three power plays. Dartmouth killed off both Saint power plays while allowing just two shots.
The third period was a back-and-forth frame with both teams playing a physical game.
53 seconds into the third, Dartmouth goalie Roan Clarke made the save of the night while SLU was on the power play. He slid right to left and made sprawling save to keep it a one goal game.
With the extra attacker on the ice for the Saints, St. Lawrence tied the game at two with 34.1 seconds remaining in regulation.
The game went to overtime and 3:05 into the extra frame St Lawrence scored to take the overtime win.
Clarke made 26 saves in the loss, the sophomore currently has a 2.67 goals against average this season.
The Big Green blocked 17 shots on Saturday night with Tucker McRae leading the way with three.
Dartmouth went 31-22 in the faceoff circle while Luke Haymes won a game best 11 faceoffs on 16 attempts. Steven Townley went 9-7 for the Big Green.
With his goal, Foley has 24 points this season which leads all ECAC defensemen. He is also sixth in the ECAC in points per game at 0.96.
The Big Green return to Thompson Arena next weekend for the final time of the regular season. On Friday, Feb. 21 the Big Green host RPI before taking on Union for senior day on Saturday, Feb. 22. Friday's faceoff is scheduled for 7 PM while Saturday puck drop is at 4 PM.
