CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Big Green softball team went 1-1 on the day on the second day of play at the Low Country Classic from Charleston.
Dartmouth took down the University of Rhode Island and fell to Ohio.
GAME 1: Dartmouth 9, Rhode Island 5
Isabel Kirby started in the circle for the Big Green and gave up one run on one hit as she got a pair of outs in the first inning, 1-0 Rhode Island.
The Big Green bounced back in the top if the second with two runs.
Justice Malone drilled a single to left field and a
Marilyn Beauvais double down the left field line brought Malone home.
Cwen Wilson also knocked a single to left, sending Beauvais to cross the plate, 2-1 Big Green. Dartmouth allowed three runs in the bottom of the third and URI regained the lead, 4-2.
An explosive five run third inning for Dartmouth propelled them to take a 7-4 lead. It started with a single from
Leila Hennessy and a Malone double to left. A
Scarlet Niles single drove in both Hennessy and Malone. Beauvais earned first after being hit by a pitch and a
Jenna Brown double allowed Niles and Beauvais to cross home plate.
Alaana Panu was hit by a pitch to get on base and eventually stole second, causing an overthrown ball and allowing Brown to reach home. URI scored one run in the bottom of the inning, 7-5 Big Green.
Dartmouth added one run in the top of the fourth.
Olivia Schramm walked to get on base and a Malone triple drove her in, 8-5 Big Green.
The final run of the game was scored by Dartmouth after a Brown single got her on base. She stole second and was able to advance to third on a throwing error by the Rams. Panu singled up the middle and sent Brown home, 9-5 Dartmouth.
Rachel McCarroll took the rubber for the final 4.1 innings, allowing no runs on just two hits while striking out six. The Big Green combined for 11 hits in the contest.
GAME 2: Ohio 5, Dartmouth 0
Ohio jumped in front early with three runs in the first inning. McCarroll started on the mound but was replaced by
Jensin Hall in the middle of the first.
In the second inning, Malone singled to right field but was left stranded. Ohio added another run in the fifth and the sixth, 5-0 Bobcats.
Hall recorded two strikeouts for the Big Green in the game.
