Big Green Move Onto ECAC Semifinals For Second Straight Season
SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—The fifth seeded Dartmouth men's hockey team punched its ticket to the ECAC Semifinals with a 7-2 win over the fourth seeded Union Garnet Chargers on Saturday. With the win the Big Green completed the sweep of Union.
Similarly to game one, it was Union who struck first. At the 11:14 mark, Union took a 1-0 lead, that would be their lone lead of the game.
At the 13:58 mark of the first, Dartmouth tied the game at one. Eric Charpentier held the puck in on the left point and fired it towards the net. The shot was going wide but Luke Haymes was tied up with a defensemen on the backdoor. The puck deflected off Haymes and into the net for his 11th goal of the season.
For the second straight night, the game was tied at one after the first period. Shots were tied at nine after 20 minutes.
At the 4:29 mark of the second period, the Big Green took a 2-1 lead. Hank Cleaves had the puck at the point just as a Dartmouth power play expired. Cleaves passed it across to Matt Fusco who fired a one-timer towards the net. The rebound sat in the low slot and John Fusco picked it up and buried his 10th goal of the season. M. Fusco picked up his sixth assist while it was Cleaves' 15th of the season.
Less than three minutes later, the Big Green capitalized on the power play. Nikita Nikora played the puck up to Hayden Stavroff who broke through the Union defense core. Stavroff dropped the puck back to Haymes who rifled home his 12th goal of the year from the slot. It was Stavroff's 12th assist while Nikora notched his team leading 25th assist.
Dartmouth took a 3-1 lead to the third period after outshooting Union 14-11 in the second period. After two periods, the Big Green also led in faceoffs 20-16.
3:08 into the third period the Big Green scored their first of four third period goals. Nate Morgan picked up loose puck in the right faceoff circle. The senior netted his third goal of the season with a wicked wrister. J. Fusco forced the turnover that freed the puck up for Morgan, he picked up his 10th assist of the year.
Less than two minutes later, Union answered to cut the Dartmouth lead to 4-2.
At the 6:29 mark, the Big Green took a three-goal lead back. Nikora danced with the puck high in the Union zone. He found CJ Foley trailing the play, Foley then found a wide open Sean Chisholm in the slot. Chisholm gained control of the puck and fired a spinning shot towards the net. The shot beat the netminder for Chisholm's 15th goal of the season. Foley notched his 19th assist while it was Nikora's 26th assist.
Union pulled its goalie ahead of the midway mark of the third period while on the power play. The Garnet Chargers had a 6v4 situation in the Dartmouth zone. At the 10:33 mark, Alex Krause blocked a one-timer and skated the puck out of the zone. He then found Cooper Flinton who scored his 11th goal of the year. It was Krause's seventh assist of the season.
The Big Green had a 5-2 lead when Union sent the Big Green to the power play for five minutes following a major penalty at the 16:25 mark. With 35 seconds remaining in regulation the Big Green worked the puck around the Union zone. Colin Grable fired the puck towards the slot, the puck deflected off Krause and went to Morgan in the left circle. Morgan picked up the loose puck and scored his fourth goal of the game. Krause notched his eighth assist of the season while Grable tallied his first collegiate point on the play.
The Big Green closed out the game with a 37-30 shot advantage and a 33-24 advantage in the faceoff circle.
Emmett Croteau made 28 saves for his 13th win of the season.
Dartmouth blocked 12 shots in the win with J. Fusco blocking a game high three.
The Big Green had 46 shot attempts, with 37 finding the goal, Union blocked just five shots.
J. Fusco, Nikora, Haymes, Morgan, and Krause all notched two points in the win while 13 different players tallied a point.
Dartmouth went 2-5 on the power play with seven shots while Union was held to just two shots on four unsuccessful power plays.
The seven Dartmouth goals is the most the Big Green have scored in a game since scoring seven goals against Princeton on Feb. 14, 2022.
Dartmouth has now defeated Union seven straight times dating back to Feb. 24, 2024
With the win the Big Green advance to the ECAC Semifinals for the second straight season. It is the first time since the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons that Dartmouth has advanced to the ECAC Semifinals in back-to-back seasons.
