Big Green Earn First Sole Ivy League Title Since 1979-80
NEW HAVEN, Conn.—Dartmouth men's hockey earned its first sole Ivy League title since 1979-80 on Saturday night with a 5-1 win over Yale to close out the regular season.
The Big Green opened the scoring just under six minutes into the game as Alex Krause netted his fourth goal of the year. Dartmouth had the puck in the Bulldog zone when the puck found Krause in the corner, the junior picked up the puck drove to the net. Despite taking a hit he buried his fourth goal of the year. Braiden Dorfman and CJ Foley each picked up assists on the play.
Dartmouth added to its lead just over 10 minutes later. Cooper Flinton netted his 10th goal of the year. The trio of Luke Haymes, Cam MacDonald and Flinton were on the forecheck and forced a turnover. The puck came to Flinton at the top of the crease and despite being turned away once he scored on the rebound. Both Haymes and MacDonald notched assists on the play.
After the opening 20 minutes, the Big Green lead 2-0 and outshot Yale 11-7.
10:34 into the second period the Big Green made it a 3-0 lead. Trym Lokkeberg won a faceoff deep in the Yale zone. Foley picked up the puck at the point and hesitated before ripping a wrist shot towards the net. The goalie got a piece of it but could not keep it out of the net as Foley scored his 11th of the year.
Three minutes later, the Bulldogs got on the board to cut it to a 3-1 Dartmouth lead.
The two goal lead was short lived as Dartmouth made it a 4-1 game at the 17:17 mark. Eric Charpentier held a puck in at the point and fired it towards the net. The puck was stopped in traffic but MacDonald picked it up and slid it cross crease to Haymes. Haymes had a wide open net for his ninth of the year. MacDonald notched his ninth assist while it was Charpentier's fourth assist.
Dartmouth took a 4-1 lead to the third period after outshooting the Bulldogs 23-18 through 40 minutes.
While on a five on three man advantage, Dartmouth scored it fifth goal of the night at the 15:55 mark. The Big Green had control in the zone as Hank Cleaves passed the puck to Matt Fusco at the point. M.Fusco faked a slapshot and fed it across to Dorfman in the left circle. Dorfman blasted home his fifth goal of the year to make it a 5-1 game.
The Big Green held off the Bulldogs for the win while outshooting Yale 33-26.
Emmett Croteau made 25 saves for his 10th win of the season.
With the win the Big Green clinched it first Ivy League title since 2006-07 and its first sole Ivy League title since 1979-80. It is the 15th time in program history that Dartmouth has won the Ivy League title.
Foley, MacDonald, Dorfman, and Haymes all tallied two points for the Big Green.
The Big Green dominated the faceoff circle winning 57.1% of faceoffs. Haymes went 16-8 in the circle while Steven Townley won eight draws. Lokkeberg went 6-1 for the Big Green.
Foley ends the regular season with 29 points in 29 games which leads all defensemen in the ECAC. He also finished third among all ECAC players in points per game.
Dartmouth is 11-1-1 this season when scoring four or more goals
In 13 of Dartmouth's 15 wins this season the Big Green have scored first.
The focus of the Big Green now turns the ECAC Tournament. Dartmouth finished fifth in the standings and will host No. 12 St. Lawrence on Saturday, Mar. 8 at 7 PM at Thompson Arena in the ECAC Opening Round.
