FAIRLEE, Vt. — The Dartmouth women's rowing team, ranked 22nd nationally, continued its strong season on Saturday when the Big Green hosted Cornell and Rhode Island at Lake Morey, winning the majority of races in the process. The Big Green varsity eight, second varsity eight and third varsity eight were perfect on the day. Northeastern also took part in the invitational.
"Today being Senior Day, the main focus was celebrating their efforts with some really fiery racing," said Dartmouth head coach
John Graves. "Overall, all the crews did that and honored all the hard work the seniors have put into this program. In all the races, I thought the crews rowed with a little extra behind the handle for the seniors. That was pretty awesome to see."
In the first session, the Big Green won five of the six races, highlighted by margins of more than 17 seconds in the varsity eight, more than 16 in the 2V and more than eight in the 3V. The varsity four also won by nearly 22 seconds while the second varsity four won by a margin of just over five.
The crews had a short break before rowing against Rhode Island later in the morning, where the Big Green were equally as successful. In that set of racing, Dartmouth was a perfect 6-for-6. Among the wins, the varsity eight won by nearly 24 seconds, with the 2V winning by more than 25 and 3V by more than 47 seconds.
"We used this weekend as really good preparation for Eastern Sprints in two weeks," said Graves. "The back-to-back racing format, needing to race hard and recovery quickly then go ahead, it's something we'll have to do at sprints in a couple weeks. I thought it was a really good day of preparation for that. I was happy with the way the team executed."
Saturday's racing wrapped up Dartmouth's pre-championship schedule, with the Eastern Sprints and Ivy League Championship coming up in May.
"We're showing decent base speed right now," said Graves. "Now, over the next couple weeks getting ready for sprints then into Ivys, it's about sharpening and finding those marginal gains to make a difference for us.
"We're transitioning to that championship mindset after this weekend," Graves continued. "It's definitely an exciting time of year."
