CAMDEN, N.J. – The Dartmouth women's rowing team wrapped up a stellar weekend at the Ivy League Championship on Sunday, with the varsity eight finishing in fourth place and the Big Green also coming in fourth in the team points standings with 27 points.
In the final team standings, Dartmouth only trailed Yale (45 points), Princeton (44) and Brown (37) while finishing ahead of Harvard (24), Penn (21), Columbia (12) and Cornell (6). The team standings took into consideration this weekend's finishes from the weekend of the NCAA boats (varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four).
The biggest story of the weekend for the Big Green was the varsity eight, who finished second in its heat on Saturday, including topping Brown. On Sunday, Dartmouth came in fourth with a time of 6:09.181, less than two seconds behind the Bears in third. The Big Green finished ahead of Penn (6:12.388) and Harvard (6:14.446). Fourth is the varsity eight's top finish at Ivies since 2014.
"Breaking 6:10 in a women's varsity eight is rare air and being able to do it twice in 24 hours is really special," said head coach
John Graves. "Just impressed with how they stayed process-oriented throughout the weekend and focused on the things giving them speed."
Dartmouth also reached the grand finals in the other NCAA boats, finishing fifth in the second varsity eight (6:24.566), ahead of Penn (6:29.112). The Big Green were also fifth in the varsity four (7:12.181), also ahead of the Quakers (7:14.977).
The third varsity eight and second varsity four also won their petite finals over Cornell.
"Regardless of the postseason implications, for me, the most important thing every year is for us to have the fastest race at the end of the year, and I felt like we really did that this weekend in all crews," said Graves. "Taking a step up and sharpening from our performance at sprints and finding some speed. Proud of their focus in these last couple weeks to squeeze every last drop of speed out of the sponge."
With the fourth-place finish, the Big Green are hopeful for an at-large bid into the NCAA Championship. The selection show is set for this Tuesday at 5 p.m. as Dartmouth is aiming for its first NCAA appearance since 2011.
"We came into the weekend wanting to give ourselves a shot and I think the team put themselves in the conversation and put our best case forward," said Graves. "Now it's in the selection committee's hands. No matter what the decision is, it doesn't change how we feel about the year, our team and the direction of the program."
