CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—The Dartmouth rugby team traveled to Cambridge to take part in the Ivy 7s Championship on Saturday. For the second straight tournament, the Big Green claimed the championship.
The Big Green opened the day in shutout fashion as Dartmouth downed Brown 31-0. Vasiti Turagavou opened the scoring less than 90 seconds into the match as Dartmouth led 12-0 at halftime. Dartmouth scored 19 points in the second half for its first win of the day.
The second match of the day saw the latest edition of the Dartmouth vs Harvard rivalry. Just over two minutes into the match, Sadie Schier got the Big Green on the board with a try. On the ensuing kickoff, Dartmouth's Katija Crawford picked up the loose ball and sprinted into the try zone to make it 10-0 Big Green. The Crimson made it a 10-5 game as the first half came to an end. Schier notched her second try of the game early in the second half and hit the conversion to make it 17-5 Big Green. Harvard tied the game with 80 seconds left in the second half. As time expired Katelyn Walker sped down the right side and scored the game winning try with no time left of the clock for the 22-17 win.
Dartmouth took on Princeton in the final game of round robin play. The Big Green took an early lead as Annie Henrich found the try zone less than a minute into the match, she hit the conversion to make it 7-0. Princeton scored a try as time expired in the first half as Dartmouth held a 19-5 lead at halftime. The Big Green kept the Tigers out of the try zone in the second half and secured a 36-5 win to advance to the championship game.
The Big Green and Crimson matched up for the second time, this time with a Ivy League Championship on the line. Henrich opened the scoring just over two minutes into the game as she darted through the middle of the Harvard defense. Three minutes later, Harvard tied the game at five with a try of their own. At the end of the first half Henrich plowed through two Harvard defenders and scored her second try of the game to give the Big Green a 10-5 lead at the half. Early in the second half, the Dartmouth defense made a big stop and turned it into offense. Henrich took a pass from Schier off a scrum and sprinted the length of the pitch to complete the hat trick. With less than two and a half minutes remaining Walker make it a 20-5 lead. Paola Arredondo Almeida added a try as time expired and Schier hit the conversion to make it a 27-5 final score.
Dartmouth has now won the Ivy 7s Championship two of the last three seasons. The Big Green are a perfect 7-0 this season in 7s play.
The Big Green close out the 7s season at the CRAA 7s Nationals Tournament in Indianapolis, Ind. starting on Friday, May 2.
