BOSTON — The Dartmouth women's rowing team followed up its strong showing in Florida last weekend with another impressive effort on Saturday in Boston. The Big Green's first and second varsity eights each came out victorious in races that featured Northeastern, Boston University and MIT.
"We had a pretty short week with travel back from Florida, cold temperatures and we only had a few rows this week leading up, so we weren't quite sure what to expect this weekend," said Dartmouth head coach
John Graves. "The crews did a really good job of picking up where they left off, handling some tough conditions in Boston really well. It was a good step forward from last year (when the Big Green lost to Northeastern)."
Dartmouth's varsity eight posted a time of 6:24.1, which was more than three seconds ahead of second-place Boston University (6:27.7). Northeastern (6:29.0) and MIT (6:41.9) followed.
The second varsity eight saw similar results, with the Big Green finishing in 6:33.1, more than seven seconds ahead of the Huskies (6:40.8) followed by Boston University (6:41.3) and MIT (6:55.3).
"A highlight for those crews was not getting flustered; being a little bit down at the start, but trusting their rhythm and base speed to win those races," said Graves. "That was a really good sign of growth and maturity for them."
Dartmouth also raced a varsity four, second varsity four and fourth varsity eight (complete results below).
The Big Green return to action next Saturday when they travel to Yale.
"It is still super early for us, so we really needed to use this as preparation for next week," said Graves. "We'll be racing a top five team in the country and obviously we'll get a really good benchmark of where we are right now and just get back to work.
"Excited about the challenge at Yale next week."
