HANOVER, N.H. – On Wednesday, Dartmouth men's soccer hosted the Northeastern Huskies for its second straight nonconference match at Burnham Field, still looking for its first win of the 2025 campaign.
Olly Spicer shined in his first career start, contributing on all three Big Green goals to propel Dartmouth to a 3-2 win over the Huskies. With their first win of the season, the Big Green now sit at 1-1-3 overall.
Dartmouth got on the board first, capitalizing on a nearly identical play to their lone goal from Saturday's game against the Warriors. Spicer took a free kick from outside the box and bent it around the wall of Huskies and in, giving the Big Green a 1-0 lead in the 22
nd minute.
"I saw the keeper was a bit further to the left, so I thought I'd just try and get it over the wall and hopefully it went in, and it did. So, I'm really happy," Spicer said.
Under ten minute later, Northeastern drew a penalty in the box to earn a penalty kick. Bryce Flowers earned his third goal of the season to pull his Huskies even.
Before the half ended, the Big Green pulled ahead. Spicer sent a ball into the box, finding
Will Lulka who was able to one touch it just between the diving Huskies keeper and the post for his first collegiate goal, and to make it a 2-1 game in favor of the Big Green.
Dartmouth continued to shine offensively in the second half, not allowing the Northeastern Huskies much momentum or sustained pressure. The defensive effort seemed to pay off for the Big Green, as in the 76
th minute, they thought they sealed the victory, but an offsides call revoked the goal.
Only three minutes later though, Spicer beat a defender and connected with
Eidur Baldvinsson, who waited for the keeper to make his move before sending the ball into the back of the net for Dartmouth's third goal of the game.
Spicer, who played a role in all three of Dartmouth's goals Wednesday, was grateful for the opportunity to be able to make an impact.
"Obviously it gives me confidence but also for the team, to help get their first win this season is really important," Spicer said. "'m just happy that I can help do that."
Northeastern pushed through the final 11 minutes, and ultimately pulled within one in the 82
nd minute, finding a loose ball in the box and beating
TJ Jeffreys, but it was not enough, as Dartmouth held on for the 3-2 victory.
Jeffreys, who earned his first start in net, made two saves for the Big Green.
Bobby Clark Head Coach of Men's Soccer
Bo Oshoniyi said getting contributions from up and down the lineup, specifically the younger guys, is important as the Big Green gear up for conference play.
"It was a team effort. We had a lot of guys on the field that contributed and did really well," Oshiniyi said. "When you can get scoring from other players, it just shows that you're a balanced team. We have a lot of depth and so it's a next many up and that's what we had tonight."
After earning their first win of the year, Oshoniyi and his team will shift their focus to Saturday, with a match slated against in-state rival UNH. Saturday's game with the Wildcats is the Big Green's last nonconference tune up before Ivy League play kicks off on Saturday, September 27.
"We want to try to build a little momentum going into Ivy League play when we start up the following weekend against Brown," Oshoniyi said. "For us is to stay the course, continue to build off of this and find ways to win games. That's what we talked about before this game; find a way and that's what we did tonight. So hopefully we can continue that trajectory against UNH."
Spicer echoed his coach. "Bring the same energy. I thought tonight we were really good on the second balls and fighting, so if we ca do that on Saturday, then I think we're in a good spot to get the win."
Kickoff against the Wildcats on Saturday is set for 6 p.m. You can watch the game on ESPN+ or follow the live stats on DartmouthSports.com.
