PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—The Dartmouth volleyball team started the Cherry and White Invitational on Friday afternoon. The Big Green squared off against Quinnipiac to start the tournament. The Big Green fell in four sets after winning the first set.
Set One (W, 25-22)
The opening set was a back-and-forth battle that featured 14 ties and seven lead changes. The score was tied at 10 after the first 20 points of the set and the teams remained battling until the final point. The score was tied at 22 when Dartmouth took the three final points to take the opening set.
Irmak Makasci and Kauany Gutz had four kills each in the set as Elle McCreery and Ava Roberts each had three kills in the set. Dartmouth had three blocks in the set, Gutz, Makascin and Raeli Smith each had a solo block. Sophia Gagnepain dished out nine assists in the set while four other members of the Big Green had an assist.
Set Two (L, 25-13)
Quinnipiac took the first point of the set and did not let up the lead the rest of the set. The Bobcats took an early 9-4 lead before a Dartmouth timeout. Despite the timeout, the Big Green could not claw out of the deficit. The Bobcats took the second set 25-13 to tie the match at one.
Makasci led the Big Green with three kills while Maddie LaFata and Roberts each had two kills. EllaMae Fitzgerald led Dartmouth with four digs while both McCreery and Roberts had two each. Gutz was credited with her second solo block of the match. Gagnepain once again led the way in the assist category as she had seven in the second set.
Set Three (L, 25-20)
The Big Green took the first point of the third as the teams traded points until the score was 5-5. Quinnipiac took a lead and held the lead for the remainder of the set. Dartmouth cut the lead to five on multiple occasions but could not close the gap as Quinnipiac won the set 25-20.
Four members of the Big Green had two kills in the third set including Gutz, Molly Power, LaFata, and Makasci. Gagnepain led Dartmouth with six assists while Fitzgerald also had an assist. Makasci had a team high seven digs in the set as seven players had a dig in the set. The duo of Power and LaFata combined for a pair of blocks in the set.
Set Four (L, 25-13)
Quinnipiac took the first four points of the fourth set and never let go of the lead as it was 15-8 at the media timeout. The Bobcats took 10 of the next 15 points to close out the match with a 25-13 win in the fourth set.
Gutz had five kills to lead Dartmouth in the fourth set. LaFata notched two kills while Smith tallied one in the set. Fitzgerald had four digs while Ellie Mattox had a pair of digs. Gutz and Smith teamed up for a block in the set.
Dartmouth tallied 40 kills in the match with nine members of the Big Green notching a kill. Gutz led the team with 11 kills while Makasci had a career high nine kills. Roberts and Gagnepain each had a service ace in the set. Gagnepain had 26 assists, it is the third time this season that she 25 or more assists in a match. Fitzgerald had a match high 17 digs, her 17 digs is both a season high and a career high.
The Big Green are back on the court at 4 PM on Saturday, Sept. 20 as Dartmouth continues the Cherry and White Invitational against Presbyterian
