Smithfield, R.I.—Dartmouth field hockey notched its first win of 2025 against Bryant on Friday. The Big Green used goals in the second and third quarters to push past the Bulldogs in the season opener.
The first quarter saw the Big Green outshoot the Bulldogs 4-2 overall with shots on goal being 3-1 Dartmouth. Both teams drew a pair of corners which did not lead to a goal for either team.
17 seconds into the second quarter, the Big Green drew a penalty corner. Riley Dumigan handled the insert, and Ella Bowman took the pass. She controlled the ball and did a quick spin and chipped the ball home from just inside the circle. Bowman picked up her eighth career goal while Dumigan notched her third career assist.
Ava Carlson started in net for the Big Green and played the first half, she faced just one shot and turned away the lone shot.
About three and a half minutes into the third quarter, the Big Green doubled their lead. Zoe Schaffer drove to post and fed a pass to the front of the cage. Sophomore Amelie Luessmann was camped in front and fired the ball home. It was Luessmann's second career goal as she scored in the season finale against Columbia. Schaffer notched her third career assist.
Dartmouth outshot the Bulldogs 4-1 in the third quarter with netminder Kylie McKinley turning away the lone shot she saw.
With 3:01 remaining in the fourth quarter Bryant cut the lead in half.
Despite the late push, the Big Green did not allow a shot in the final three minutes to earn the win.
The Big Green outshot Bryant 14-4 including 11-3 in shots on goal. Dartmouth earned seven penalty corners while allowing five.
Both Luessmann and Bowman had three shots with both having three shots on goal. Olivia Galiotos, Schaffer, and first-year Ava Russo each had a shot.
Dartmouth head coach Mark Egner was proud of how the team executed its gameplan in the season opening win. "This was a really enjoyable team win. We went into today with a clear plan and the team executed that really well. It's great to start the season with a win, and we're hoping to build off this momentum moving forwards."
It is the second time in the last three seasons that the Big Green have opened the season with a win. The Big Green are back on the field for their home opener on Friday, Sept. 12 at 3 PM as Maine travels to Hanover.
