HANOVER, N.H.—No. 10/9 Dartmouth men's hockey tied Clarkson 2-2 on Friday night at Thompson Arena but took the extra point by winning the shootout.
The Big Green came out of the gates firing as they took the lead just 64 seconds into the game. Nikita Nikora had the puck on the right wing and fed it to Colin Grable at the point. Grable corralled the puck and fired it towards the net. Fellow sophomore Jack Silverberg was in the slot and got his stick on it. The puck bounced past the Clarkson netminder into the net to give Dartmouth the 1-0 lead. Silverberg notched his third goal of the year while Grable picked up his seventh assist, it was Nikora's 10th assist of the year.
There was no more scoring for the rest of the opening frame despite each team having eight shots on goal. Dartmouth nearly doubled up the Golden Knights in the faceoff circle in the opening period, the Big Green went 9-5 in the circle.
2:38 into the middle frame, the Golden Knights tied the game at one while on the power play. Nearly 11 minutes later, Clarkson took the 2-1 lead and took it to the locker room.
Late in the second period, the Big Green faced a five-minute penalty kill, Dartmouth allowed just two shots in the five-minute penalty kill.
The Big Green tied the game while on the power play at the 5:42 mark of the third period. Dartmouth passed the puck around the zone until Silverberg had the puck in the high slot. He fed a pass out to Hayden Stavroff in the left circle, Stavroff then found CJ Foley at the point. Foley slid a no-look pass back to Stavroff who one-timed home his 18th goal of the season to tie the game. Foley notched his 10th assist while it was Silverberg's third of the year.
Both teams looked to secure the three-point regulation win but both goalies stayed strong to force overtime.
In overtime, Foley tallied the lone shot on goal but it was turned away with 90 seconds left in the extra frame.
With the game officially ending in a tie, the teams went to the shootout in search of the extra point.
Both Emmett Croteau and the Clarkson netminder made six straight saves to open the shootout. Nikora hopped over the boards to start the seventh round. He came down the ice slow waiting for the netminder to bite. Nikora went low glove side once he hit the hashmarks and the puck found the back of the net. Croteau made his seventh straight save in the shootout to secure the extra point for the Big Green.
Croteau made a season high 30 saves in the tie, against Clarkson this season he made 54 saves for a .947 save percentage and a 1.45 goals against average across two games. Overall, this season, he is 7-2-1 with a 1.79 goals against average and a .928 save percentage.
Dartmouth edged out the Golden Knights in the faceoff circle 28-25. Andrew Clarke had a team best 77.8 winning percentage as he went 7-2 in the circle. Hank Cleaves and Nathan Morin each won seven faceoffs as well.
The Big Green and Golden Knights closed out the season series on Friday, the Big Green took five of a possible six points in the series this season.
Dartmouth blocked 13 shots in the game with Foley, Morin, and Tim Busconi each blocking a pair of shots, Cam MacDonald led Dartmouth with three blocks.
Senior captain Tucker McRae skated in his 100th career game on Friday, he joins MacDonald as the only two Dartmouth players to have played in at least 100 collegiate games.
