HANOVER, N.H.—No. 10/9 Dartmouth men's hockey skated to a 4-0 win over St. Lawrence on Saturday night at Thompson Arena to improve to 11-1-1 at home this season.
The Big Green struck just 3:08 into the opening period. Hank Cleaves picked up a loose puck in the Dartmouth zone and saw Hayden Stavroff streaking ahead of him. Cleaves fired a stretch saucer pass to Stavroff as he caught the pass in stride. Cam MacDonald joined the play and set up a two on one with Stavroff. Stavroff held on to the puck and let a wrister go that found the top left corner of the net for his 19th goal of the year. Cleaves notched his 14th assist of the season.
Neither team scored for the remainder of the opening frame despite Dartmouth outshooting St. Lawrence 16-7. Dartmouth edged out the Saints 13-10 in the faceoff circle to open the game.
Just ahead of the midway mark of the second period, the Big Green made it a 2-0 game. MacDonald was tied up near the Saint blue line but redirected a pass towards the middle of the ice. Stavroff shoveled the puck into the slot to Cleaves who beat his defender to the loose puck. Cleaves faked a forehand deke and went to his backhand and slid the puck home for his ninth of the year. Stavroff picked up his 10th assist while it was MacDonald's 12th assist.
The Big Green took the 2-0 lead to the locker room after holding St. Lawrence to just two shots in the second period. After 40 minutes of play, Dartmouth was outshooting the Saints 26-9 and 26-16 in the faceoff dot.
6:26 into the third period, the Big Green made it a three goal game as Stavroff found the scoresheet for the 20th time this season. MacDonald won a battle below the St. Lawrence redline and the poked the puck to Cleaves. Cleaves took the puck to the half wall and looked for a pass. He found Stavroff in the slot. Stavroff controlled the puck and pulled the puck into his body before releasing a laser into the top corner of the cage. Cleaves picked up his 15th assist of the season while it was MacDonald's 13th.
With 10 seconds left in the third, MacDonald joined his linemates in the goal column. Colin Grable and Jack Silverberg fed MacDonald the puck just inside the St. Lawrence blueline and the senior made no mistake as he drilled the empty net for his third goal of the year. Silverberg picked up his fourth assist while Grable notched his eighth.
Roan Clarke started in net for the Big Green, he earned his second shutout of the season by making 18 saves. He made nine saves in the third period to secure his seventh win of the season. The junior has a 1.91 goals against average and a .907 save percentage this season.
With his two goals, Stavroff becomes the first Dartmouth player to score 20 goals in a season since Drew O'Connor '22 scored 21 goals in his final Dartmouth season in 2019-20.
Dartmouth had seven sophomores in the lineup on Saturday night, the group combined for three goals and five assists in the win.
The line of Stavroff, Cleaves, and MacDonald combined for nine points with all three players tallying three points.
The Big Green tallied 38 shots in the win, it is the fifth time this season that Dartmouth has tallied 35 or more shots.
Dartmouth is 12-1-0 this season when leading after two periods.
Eric Charpentier finished the game with a +2 rating, this season he has a team best +23 rating. Grable, his defense partner, is tied with MacDonald for second on the team with a +21 rating. Charpentier is second in the ECAC in +/- while Grable and MacDonald are tied for third.
The Big Green have just four more home games in the regular season, through 13 home games, the Big Green are 11-1-1 and have outscored their opponents 52-21.
Dartmouth hits the road for a pair of games in New York next weekend. The Big Green renew their rivalry with Cornell on Friday, Jan. 23 at 7 PM before taking on Colgate on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 7 PM.
