HANOVER, N.H. –The Dartmouth men's basketball team secured a thrilling 71-69 victory over Princeton at Leede Arena on Monday evening, improving to 3-1 in Ivy League play and tying with Yale and Harvard for first in the League.
Kareem Thomas made a statement, going on a five point run to tie the game with four minutes left. After gaining possession with a defensive rebound, Thomas paused for a few seconds midcourt before running up the middle, winding up and dunking for a 69-79 lead. He then went on to secure the game winner with three seconds left in the game.
Thomas led the team with 22 points, marking his seventh game of the season with 20+ points this season. Jayden Williams followed behind with 13 points, while Cam Hiatt put up 10.
UP NEXT: The Big Green will wrap their home stand on Saturday, Jan. 24 when hosting Columbia at 2:00 p.m. for Youth Cheer Day.
FIRST HALF:
Connor Amundsen opened up scoring for the Big Green with a jumper, followed by a Thomas three pointer.
Princeton began applying pressure on the big green, taking the 11-10 lead with a layup before Williams reclaimed the lead with a layup of his own.
The Tigers took as much as a nine point lead before the Big Green began chipping at the deficit again. There was a back and forth battle in the final four minutes of the half, with Princeton fighting back each time Dartmouth attempted to regain control of the score.
Princeton had a seven point lead heading into the half.
SECOND HALF:
William opened the second half with a fast break three pointer, followed by two made free throws by Munro.
The Big Green came as close as one point from tying the game, but Princeton's offense kept pushing until it gained as much as a nine point lead.
With less than five minutes left in the game, Williams got a rally going with a layup, followed by a Thomas free throw, layup and three pointer, as well as a Mitchell-Day free throw.
With seven seconds left in the game, Thomas had a layup blocked by Princeton's Jacob Huggins. Moments later, Leede Arena erupted in cheers as Thomas secured the win with a jumper.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Dartmouth scored 28 points in the paint, while its bench was responsible for 20 points overall.
The Big Green shot 75% from the free throw line, making 12 of 26 shots.
Dartmouth pulled away with a victory after only holding the lead for 7 minutes.
