HAMDEN, Conn.—No. 9/8 Dartmouth men's hockey fell to No. 10 Quinnipiac on Saturday night on the road by a score of 5-3.
For the 13th time this season the Big Green opened the scoring. At the 11:18 mark of the opening frame, CJ Foley scored his third goal of the season. Cam MacDonald fought with Quinnipiac defenders and the puck popped back to Foley at the point. Foley got to the high slot and wristed home the first goal of the game. MacDonald notched his 11th assist of the year.
The Bobcats answered just over a minute later and then took the lead at the 14:05 mark of the frame.
With 14 seconds left in the opening period, the Big Green tied the game. Foley gained control of the puck at the right point and fed a pass across to Tim Busconi. Busconi one-timed the pass but it was blocked, he then controlled the puck and fired it back towards the net. The puck got through and beat the screened goalie to tie the game at two. It was Busconi's first collegiate goal while Foley notched his ninth assist.
The next goal didn't come until the 16:33 mark of the second period. Jason Stefanek got the puck to Eric Charpentier at the left point. He fired the puck towards the net, but it was blocked. Joshua Schenk picked up the loose puck and curled in the left faceoff circle. The Whitehorse, Yukon native fired a shot to the far side that beat the goalie to give the Big Green a 3-2 lead. It was his first collegiate goal for Schenk while Charpentier picked up his fifth assist, Stefanek notched his sixth assist of his first-year.
With 35 seconds left in the second period, the Bobcats tied the game at three.
Dartmouth netminder, Emmett Croteau made 12 saves in the second period as the teams went to the locker room tied at three.
5:08 into the third period, Quinnipiac took a 4-3 lead and then added an empty net goal with 2:14 left.
Despite outshooting Quinnipiac in the third period, the Big Green could not find the back of the net.
Croteau made 25 saves in the loss, he is now 6-2-0 this season with a 1.51 goals against average and a .939 save percentage. He leads the country in save percentage while being second in the country in save percentage.
The Big Green won 30 of 58 faceoffs while Hank Cleaves went 18-12 on 30 faceoffs. Andrew Clarke won seven faceoffs for the Big Green.
There were just two penalties in the game, the Big Green held Quinnipiac to just two shots on their lone power play.
Dartmouth blocked 16 shots in the game. Senior captain, Tucker McRae blocked a game high four shots while Foley, Nikita Nikora, Schenk, and Brock Cummings each blocked two shots.
