HANOVER, N.H.—No. 11/10 Dartmouth men's hockey defeated ECAC and Ivy League rival RV/20 Harvard 5-4 on Friday night at Thompson Arena.
The Crimson opened the scoring 12:06 into the game with a shorthanded goal to take a 1-0 lead.
Just over six minutes later at the 18:11 mark the Big Green tied the game at one. The Big Green broke out the puck and Hank Cleaves hit Hayden Stavroff with a breakout pass and he rushed through the neutral zone. Colin Grable joined the rush and set up a two on one. Stavroff looked off the defensemen and hit the top right corner for his 16th goal of the year. Cleaves notched is 12th assist of the year on the play.
The teams went to the locker room tied at one as the Big Green outshot the Crimson 9-7 in the opening period.
4:09 into the middle stanza, the Big Green took the 2-1 lead. Jason Stefanek took a wrist shot that went wide of the net from the right wing. The puck rattled around the boards to Eric Charpentier at the left point. Charpentier threw the puck towards the net and Brock Cummings redirected it into the bottom corner of the net. Cummings picked up his third goal of the year while Charpentier earned his sixth assist and Stefanek his seventh.
Harvard scored their second shorthanded goal of the game at the 6:20 mark to tie the game at two.
The Big Green once again responded, at the 13:54 mark the duo of Stavroff and Grable found themselves on a two on one again. Grable drove up the right wall and fed a perfect pass to Stavroff. Stavroff one-timed the puck into the bottom corner to beat the sprawling goalie to make it a 3-2 game. Grable picked up his fifth assist while Cleaves notched his 13th of the year.
Less than two minutes later, Harvard tied the game at three.
Dartmouth wasn't done in the second period, with 52 seconds left in the frame the Big Green took the lead back. Stefanek forced a turnover high in the Crimson zone and Charpentier picked up the puck. He fed a pass to Jack Silverberg who gained speed heading into the Harvard zone. Silverberg beat his defender wide and threw the puck off the back of the Harvard goalie and into the net for his second goal of the season. Charpentier picked up his seventh assist while it was Stefanek's eighth.
After two periods of play, the Big Green led in shots 17-14 and 20-18 in the faceoff circle while leading 4-3.
Harvard tied the game at four just under six minutes into the third period.
The Big Green broke the tie just past the midway mark of the third period. Charpentier gained control of the puck at the left point and fired it across to Grable. Grable took a shot through traffic that went off the post and sat in the crease. Both Stavroff and Cleaves touched it before Cleaves powered it into the net to give Dartmouth a 5-4 lead. Cleaves notched his eighth goal while it was Stavroff's ninth assist and Grable's sixth of the year.
Dartmouth held onto the lead despite Harvard tallying 10 shots in the third period.
Emmett Croteau started in net for the Big Green and notched his seventh win of the season as he made 20 saves on 24 shots. This season he has a .928 save percentage and a 1.78 goals against average in nine games.
Stavroff tallied three points in the win, he has 17 goals this season and nine assists, he leads in the ECAC in goals and goals per game while being second in points and points per game.
Cleaves also tallied three points with a goal and two assists. He has six multi-point games this season including three with three or more points.
Charpentier, Grable, and Stefenak each had two points while Cummings and Silverberg each had a point.
The Big Green won 54.7% of draws as Cleaves went 16-6 in the faceoff circle to have a 72.7 winning percentage.
Dartmouth is now 10-1-0 at Thompson Arena this season and have outscored opponents 46-19 at home. Through 11 games at home, Stavroff has a team best 20 points on 12 goals and eight assists. Cleaves sits in second with five goals and 11 assists. It is the first season since the 2017-18 season that Dartmouth has won 10 games at home.
